Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Status
Not open for further replies.
FYI: I had the exact same problems last night. I did switch to Google's DNS, and the problem did not resolve. Some videos would scream down the pipe, others would only work at lower resolutions.

Sometimes videos would play at lower resolutions up to a point, and then just stop - necessitating a switch to a different resolution to continue. (Sometimes this was, strangely, a higher resolution. And some videos I could never get to start.)

My DNS does reset to Afrihost though once the connection drops - will check tonight if it is still on Google and report back if it happens again.

Exactly what I was experiencing.
Except last night I did not switch to Google DNS, went str8 over to VOX.

This morning Instagram images didn't load in my phone. YouTube videoa played at 144p. Later it got better and defaulted to 1080p. It seems inconsistent. On 8mb ADSL with capped product. I'll run some tests if issue occurs again

Thanks for all the info, it really does help a lot.

Would you mind switching your DNS to automatic and seeing if that makes any difference to the quality of your experience.

But then other videos stream on YouTube, start a bit bumpy but then mostly streams.

Bit unfair to criticise our logging, if we see trending issues we get on them and fix them - there haven't been any trending issues. As mentioned, if you do continue to experience issues please run the recommended tests and paste the data here so we have a better idea of what's going on.

In a PM to me the other day Afriman said he's seen the YouTube issues at night being reported. This is what he said:

Thanks so much for the PM. I've seen a few posts like this, but it's been difficult to sift out the relevent info from the rest of the things being posted about the reps, etc.

Every night in this thread people in the Western Cape report having trouble with YouTube and have provided stats. To say that you don't see trending issues is disconcerting considering the exact same issue is being reported every night by multiple in here and people I know on Afrihost in the Western Cape.

Once again right now certain videos (in particular, live streams) don't load up and YouTube's "stats for nerds" shows no content coming through. As stated earlier, these streams I believe come from international destinations. Other YouTube links that work (popular videos) are loaded from locally cached servers and therefore work.

For what it's worth, here's some stats:

(I have tried with both automatic dns and with Google's 8.8.8.8).

Myself and others have already posted screenshots of YouTube's stats showing a very low connection since last week. I'm on 20mbps vdsl and get about 17mbps most times for videos, but each night around the same time (7pm onwards) Live streams and other YouTube videos loading from international destinations are either very bad or don't connect at all.

I don't know if it is the Content/Cache server/s we connect to that is being overloaded at this time of day.
Or if it is the route that we follow from our exchanges via telkom infrastructure to the Content/Cache server that gets overloaded.

But noting on the ping or traces indicated anything.

If I switch over to VOX now it should work. Let me try and send a image of the stream I am trying to watch although it has already stopped.

And totally as expected stream instantly and no problem to get 1080p and it builds a healty buffer.

Not loading. Here's the stats: http://i.imgur.com/SOujjSw.jpg

Conversely, a regular video is running great: http://i.imgur.com/YSFW7T4.jpg

It's an issue with streams loading from international destinations. But only at night. Daytime is fine.

If I connect to the internet using a different ISP live streams work perfect; so therefore it's not an issue with YouTube but rather with Afrihost. Fingers crossed you'll get to the root of the problem.

Thanks for the screenshots!

We've definitely seen a reduction in the number of complaints that we've received about Youtube, so we're making progress, but there is still some room for improvement remaining still.

Waited for about 3min and the "Stream Host" automatically changed and started to work.

Thanks for sharing your result, there's definitely something up here. Are you seeing this happen with all Youtube Live videos or only that specific one?
Only this one but I normally do not watch live streams. :)
