Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Remember that shaping only affects throughout (download speed) on specific services, which would be non-realtime. So even though we're not shaping Capped, if that were the case your latency and ping would be preserved. The results you're showing are showing the kind of latency that points to other issues. Not sure why Germany is the new testing standard on this thread these days, but it looks like latency is mostly increased once we enter the host network for the site you are pinging :(

I'm sorry, what?

Is from your peering network off to another, you're still in charge of managing that.

And who cares that we pick Frankfurt, the point is international past your London peering.

EDIT: And "Remember that shaping only affects throughout (download speed) on specific services, which would be non-realtime". Look at my throughput. Was the same to every site.

So which AH rep is on at the moment? Trying to sort out this capped shaping thing via pm but the reps have gone quiet.

I think what AM was saying is that shaping can not be depicted or pinpointed on a traceroute test, so it's impossible to draw those kinds of conclusions. I'm happy to pass your account onto our Critical Care Team for further testing.

Definitely not ideal here, though our team have not been reporting any general latency.

We like to see BRAS ping below 10ms or thereabouts, but 20 is not so bad. Can you test again this morning and tell me what you're seeing?

Again, so now whats the plan?

Afrifella - please ignore the pm requesting changes on my account. I first want to understand this whole thing 100% before I do anything. Thanks.

I don't think anyone understands it 100% including Afrihost.

Have you been able to test the BRAS this morning?

hmmm...so how many tests would afrihost like me to do? Maybe give me a number so i know whats expected of me.
Ill go home and do it shortly. Yes! im taking out time from work just to go home and do the ping just to prove my point.

Not sure what you guys mean? I'm happy to clarify anything that might seem confusing.

Ok then try this not quite so hypothetical example:

An elderly couple want internet to watch movies and skype the grand kids in Australia or America etc.
They have no concept of capped, shaped freetime double data etc.
They just want affordable internet that meets their needs at a price point.

A family member from America, whilst here on holiday, sets up an Afrihost Unshaped 100GB account based on the fact that 100GB is more data than they need and unshaped is essential for Streaming and Skype.

Several years later you have added Double Data, they don't care, they probably don't even know.

Then you add Free time, but they are mainly streaming and skyping in the evenings so they don't notice.
They are still happy within the 100GB they pay for.

Now suddenly you take away the package they have been paying for for several years add data that they dont need or want and remove the unshaped aspect which they do need and want.

The family member is in America, the Old couple don't understand your email and, rightly assume, that the account will default to what they have been paying for all along. But instead it defaults to a totally different package.

That my friend is borderline "bait and switch" and I think the Consumer Council will be getting several similar reports.

Cancel Dubble data and free time, that is your prerogative, change someone's package from unshaped to Shaped just because it suits your bottom line is not.
