Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Correct

Same network, different companies but overall owned by Afrihost.

Different management, different ideas but there is some sort of stake in Axxess yes by Afrihost. I know they mentioned this a while back.

So no Internet whatsoever, no backup plans in place? Not impressed.

Happy new year AfriMan, ok, less Happy I suppose, thanks for update, a fairly accurate ETA would help, ASAP is not cutting it.

We don't have one right now, it depends on the extent of the damage, and obviously there will need to be some testing, etc.

But now that we know the issue, in the past this has been fairly quick to get resolved.

We have redundancy in place for pretty much every scenario, but we can't run two parallell networks, with one for just in case. We could re-route, but that may cause other issues in terms of congestion, etc, so we have determine the best overall solution.

Is there some sort of eta? I've been down since just after 6.

Afrihost & Axxess down (though, as a Afrihost support tech told me, What happens to Afrihost, happens to Axxess because they are the same company - any truth to that?)

Afrihost owns Axxess, so we do have some shared resources (we use the same network backbone, for example). However they are independantly run, they manage their services in their own way, so in many ways we still compete directly with them :)

Redundancy in place for every scenario except this one. Internet has been down for nearly 6 hours now. Re-routing should have taken place already until the break in the fiber line has been fixed and tested then re-route the clients through the normal channels once everything is back to normal. No need to run two parallel networks.

Not at the moment. I think they only located the fibre break in the last hour or so, so we'll know more once the on-site team reports the extent of the damage.

Damn :( guess I'll have to go spend time outside with my babalas.

Happy new year everyone! I feel it's going to be a great one! :)

In response to a few comments above, etc just keep in mind that this is one of the first major issues in a very long time. Many companies wouldn't even provide the amount of feedback that we are receiving right now. The fact that the support peeps are in on the first Sunday of a new year is a testament to say that they're doing all they can. ETA's are impossible to give because they're not always possible to achieve, and spreading false hope would make the situation worse.

So yeah, me out :p Shot AfriPeeps for your time spent away from families/friends to be here.

Rerouting traffic would affect other users, and cause increased latency and congestion, causing us to shape harder. Given the nature of the situation, we need to determine the best course of action for all our clients, including those currently unaffected. We believe the fibre break should be quickly restored, which will instantly restore connectivity, and that this is the fastest and simplest solution for all our clients.

Always happy to keep our clients informed.

Hope you have a fantastic 2017, buddy :)

Then you don't have redundancy in place for every situation.

At about 00:20 I was in a game of dota when i saw massive packet loss ingame and on teamspeak, what was the cause of this.

Also, what broke the fibre?

Then you don't have redundancy in place for every situation.

Aside from running two parallel, discreet networks, it's impossible to cater for every situation. Even if you run a redundant fibre cable, if the nature of the break is physical, it's likely to affect that redundant cable, you might remember this happened a while back with all the undersea cables off the coast of Egypt.

We have contigencies in place, but there is always a choice to be made. Re-routing traffic means congesting other regions to divert traffic. That is a redudnancy that is in place, but we'd prefer to not go that route unless we absolutely have to, as this will then increase the number of affected clients substantially. Given that the South is one of the biggest regions in terms of demand, this will make everyone's experience terrible.

We don't know the cause, so it's hard to say. I don't think fibre would break gradually, but it's possible that it wasn't a sudden failure.
