Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 3

ADSL down for anyone else in Cape Town?

I'm not seeing any Telkom network-related issues reported for your area.

Could you maybe switch your DSL modem to the VDSL modulation quickly and see if that helps?

So Telkom phoned me again today and said they implemented some new system thing-a-majig that will auto detect your distance from the exchange and this will cause disconnects and packet loss, etc. And due to my distance from the exchange I can do 4Mbps max, reliably.

Although this sounds like utter BS to me, I was too busy at work to fight with them. So I have downgraded my linespeed from 8Mbps to 4Mbps on Clientzone (it has also taken effect already). So I will monitor my latencies and packet loss tonight.

I will be removing testicles from body if this does not work.

Running pingplotter right now, my latency to reddit.com is 350ms (which is 130ms odd more than what it should be)...
I also have packet loss on my first 2 hops after my modem. My latency is about 20ms lower on the first few hops (4-9), but then for some reason I am going via Mumbai and Singapore??

Afrihost guy on clientzone downgraded me to 6Mbps instead of 10, 12dB SNR, still have dropped packets...

If your DSL Line is with us, we can ask that the modulation be updated to VDSL for you, drop me a PM and I'll ask our Telkom Service Manager to get that done for you.

My internet was fine for about 2hours, now it's back to where it was earlier. Greater than 2000ms latency to afrihost.co.za, with 10% packet loss as a minimum on all hops.

Info on my modem, no idea what is good/bad.

Noise Margin(dB): Downstream:6.6 Upstream:24.7
Attenuation(dB): Downstream:40 Upstream:24

Tried that still nothing

Just a heads up, if your DSL modulation has been set to VDSL your router may be able to sync but you will not be able to establish a PPPoE connection unless you set a VLAN ID of 835 (it should be in a similar page to where you would normally input your ADSL account details in your router).

Do you have another ISP account to test with? To me that looks symptomatic of exchange congestion... I feel that a physical connection fault would be present more frequently, if not, all the time.

Your attenuation values are both okay, however your downstream noise margin is a bit low for some reason. Although saying that anything above 6dB should be able to hold a connection without too many issues.

I ran 4Mbps with around 54dB attenuation (higher is worse as it indicates more noise on the line) with an SNR that fluctuated between 6 and 10 dB fine for quite a long time. Never had any prominent latency issues.

Can't even get it to sync

Yeah I already tried 2 different ISP (trial) accounts, I had the same issue with them.

I just don't understand how exchange congestion can happen so suddenly though. December was fine, no issues at all. Now, my internet is unusable at night. It didn't deteriorate or anything.

How is exchange congestion fixed? What does Telkom have to do?

Same here (Durbanville area). DNS issue again?

Outage No: 135007 - ADSL services in the brackenfell 3 (021981-021982, 521981) area may be inaccessible due to an outage. Logged on : 19-Jan 21:06

It all depends on the demand tbh, I'm not entirely sure how they manage to "oversell" their capacity to begin with.

Solutions will differ, when I experienced exchange congestion years ago it was a simple fix of raising the bandwidth limit on the DSLAM in the exchange (shared between multiple users). Sometimes though they have to upgrade their backhaul capacity first otherwise they could cause congestion further down the line.

@Afripep
Could you put me back at 10Mbps, the 6Mbps drop in profile did nothing to lower latency/packet loss in the evening. Could you also reopen the line fault that was closed, even though in the SMS it states that I have to send them a "all all right" for them to close it...

That's 9 days of an open line fault, reopen that one and keep adding.

Yeah, if you're seeing the same results on multiple accounts it really confirms congestion. :( Telkom will usually prioritise exchange maintenance based on demand in your area. Are your neighbours experiencing similar problems?

Sorry about the late reply. :( Didn't see any DNS issues last night. How are things running for you today?

Edit:

Ah, looks like it was caused by a Telkom outage. :(

Did you actually downgrade your line package in ClientZone or did Telkom just drop your sync profile?
