Afrihost New Network Feedback

Seems my ping issues went ignored, maybe can you give a little feedback on why the ping/packet loss has been super erratic ? (mainly talking about EU ping)

Definitely not ignoring you, there were over 5 pages of comments from yesterday, so it's a little hard to reply every posts, I may have missed one or two :(

I definitely was not aware of any packet loss on the network over the weekend. I know that there was a brief auth issue, which I reported.

Any tests I can look at? Preferably MTR so I can see latency and packet loss. Or ping plotter is good.

Definitely should not be an issue with our new system, we have tested VPN specifically with a entry level router and all services should work.

Have you definitely disabled L2TP on your side?

really?

Does this include VPN's which requires the public IP to be available? i.e. ipsec, gre, ipip tunnels? There's SO much that won't work without having the public IP on the CPE it's not even funny...

You've effectively made your static IP offering, useless.

I think that any ISP is going to use the same terms and provisions for Fibre as ADSL. While there is more control and less chance of service degrading on fibre, there are still lots of factors that can ultimately affect final speeds, especially with multiple infrastructure providers like Smart Village, Telkom, Vumatel, etc. Absolutely guaranteeing speeds would be problematic.

I'm not expecting a guarantee of 100Mbps. Just a statement that 100Mbps is the target best effort would suffice.

I'm surprised you guy haven't included uncapped midnight data in Afrihost Plus btw. It would make a big difference for me on 100Mbps. It's possible to clear 260GB in a single midnight to 6am window after all.

It's something we are always thinking about. The trouble has always been that we like to keep our products super simple. But now that we've changed new networks, it's a benefit that makes a lot of sense for our clients. I'm hoping we can do something in this vein soon.

In terms of fibre, our capped DSL is intended to run as fast as your line can go, so it would not be rate limited to 40Mbps.

It's a good idea! Especially when you look at the bandwidth graphs for the timeframe from 11pm-5:30am, there is only about 13% utilization!

If you pushed that timeframe by offering uncapped services during those few hours, you'd both promote downloading during off-peak times, and ensure that your network stays active during those times!

Is anyone else having problems with DynDNS? Afrigreen does not seem to be issuing ADSL modems with unique pingable IP's anymore.

That's definitely a good upside - and pretty much our thinking on this :)

We definitely issue unique IP's, nothing would work without that. It definitely sounds like the functionality you are after requires a Static IP. As I mentioned, I'm happy to setup a trial for you so you can test for the functionality you are looking for.

Great experience with Afrihost this weekend. We were able to live stream the SA vs NZ RWC2015 game from now.dstv.com in HD. Only had one drop out (in the last 5 minutes) but it looked more related to DStv's web site as the stream disappeared and refreshing the page swiftly resolved it.

Thanks so much for the positive feedback :)

Hi Afriman

As i said on friday i only started using my inet then,as i was away when u did the rollover. So i tested the network over the weekend,i have not seen any better performance, infact my internet was definitely slower than it was a week ago,and for the past year actually since i joined.

I stream my sport from ssp and now for the first time i'm having troubles with it,yesterdays RWC game i couldn't stream, constant buffering, the boks game the streaming was also having it's problems. I've been using ssp streaming for a year now and never had such a problem before, youtube streaming also slower, pages i can notice is a bit slower in loading, its not that the internet is giving weird latency problems or anything, just that i can notice the speeds are not on par as what i had for the last year.

I have recently been experiencing email issues with Thunderbird. Emails are being delayed.
I also noticed that when I send, I have to send an email more than once, as the first few times I get an SMTP error (connection timeout). I investigated with our VPS host, and we have ruled out any changes on our server. All my email accounts that are affected are using port 587.

Upon further investigation, the cause is the new AH network... strangely, I now know that this has been happening since the move onto POC (AfriGreen), and now this is evident on the full production network, too.

When I telnet query port 587 on ANY AH account, it times out... I have done the same tests with MWEB, Telkom, VOX, WA and CrystalWeb - these all work perfectly / FIRST TIME.

Would it be possible to ask your network guys to look into it? It may just be a firewall setting, or they need to add 587 to an allowed list.

PS. The original AH network (MTN) worked without any issue on port 587... the problem only surfaced since POC and now Production

Sorry about that :( I did stream a bit of the game off Super Sport and I personally didn't see any issues.
We'll definitely need to take a look at some tests to advise further.

Hhmm, that's very odd indeed.
Would you be able to FW our team through the headers of a delayed mail so we can work on a fix?

I'm going to give a couple of days to just test it more and see if i experience any other problems.

I believe the delays are directly related to the block on port 587.
Is this port not open on your network?

[cknipe@amnesiac ~]$ telnet smtp.mweb.co.za 587
Trying 196.35.198.134...
Connected to smtp.mweb.co.za.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 securemail-pl-omx5.synaq.com ESMTP Pinpoint

Fine here. Tested with smtp.gmail.com too...

SMTP details should stay the same, but I doubt a port itself is causing an email delay.
Mail delays usually come in when various firewalls, or somewhere along the SMTP process, too many retries need to happen, or there's a mail queue to get through.

It's always best to look at mail headers to determine what's happening here.
