ok im on a 10mbps uncapped line with afrihost

did we get some sort of "free" bump in speed?

Looks like you moved over to interleaved from FastPath. Telkom are doing this en-masse to give people speeds closer to their product speed (and allow lines to sync at higher rates).

Is Afrihost shaping youtube traffic at the moment on business unshaped uncapped accounts? I can't seem to get more than around 1mbit performance:

Normal Speed Test is running fine though:

We're never going to shape YouTube as a realtime service. However, do remember that some Google traffic was being routed via international links, and there is still an international outage on WACS and SEACOM (still down as far as I know).

Google should be back to local now, but let me check and confirm.

At the expense of latency... Web pages do take a lot longer to "react" to my requests

Guys I understand that you do your network management to shape other protocols and what not to get the 3rd to 4th hop of CT north Durbanville to work etc... but really having your game latency spike up from 19ms to 100ms every few minutes on Afrihost is k a k. You need to start managing your network before that occurs not afterward...

We don't shape gaming traffic, but I think it's possible that spikes in demand can take a few minutes to register and then for the system to react, implement shaping policies and then assess whether the changes have the desired effect. There is no perfect scenario where this can happen instantly, but our tests show it happens within a few minutes, which is pretty much the best that I have ever seen.

According to Telkom the latency induced should be minimal. Your test didn't seem to indicate latency was particularly poor. Are you seeing latency elsewhere?

Well I think I've uncovered the mystery of my YouTube/Twitch problem: Afrihost(or their upstream) is throttling international bandwidth down to around 0.4-0.8mbit on 2mbit accounts:

Local (full 2mbit):

I assume this is due to the Seacom/WACS break and their fail over links not having the capacity to service their clients at more than around 50%, which would explain why the 4mbit client is seeing 2mbit...

*also seeing poor loading of gmail this eve.

We don't throttle international bandwidth or local bandwidth, but if contention is high, we institute regular shaping to limit BitTorrent, etc and bring demand back in line. We've rarely seen occasions where we've had to shape at maximum to achieve this with the additional capacity we have at the moment.

However, remember that international demand could also be a factor in us implementing shaping, and with WACS and SEACOM down, there is high demand for international. But we won't throttle bandwidth by policy and as far as I can see (right now) our international links are doing well.

It has been a week since I asked them to limit my upload sync speed to 3mb to try and stabilise my service. I had to explain it to two different staff what does it mean to limit a sync speed and today it is still not done. Luckily every now and again it is stable, but I don't like to reboot the router constantly. When I dealt with Telkom direct they did it while I was on the phone.

It may not be the easiest pill to swallow, but have you considered getting a more expensive router?

I bought an ASUS DSL-N66U about two weeks ago and you can customize just about anything on it. I also experience unstable connections quite often, but that's because Telkom has so many dirty copper connections in my area that my SNR spikes too high (between 6 and 9db). The router allows me to adjust the ratio on the router to stabilize the SNR. Doing this sacrifices a bit of speed though, but it definitely makes the connection more stable :)

I'd rather do this than get grey hairs from being offline every-so-often. We'll get fibre one day and it'll all be over :)

Does anyone have some feedback for me on the congestion on my exchange? I am really getting tired of seeing 999 spikes when playing some COD. The line is really behaving badly.... :(

Genie - please see if you can follow up on that ticket I sent you? Thanks mate!

Best to channel all the via AfriGenie, becuase I don't have too much background on this issue.

He is pretty religious about answering his PM's as soon as he gets into the office :)

If you had a lot of rain this weekend, it may have had an effect your line. I couldn't use my internet much either because my line didn't stay synced. Latencies were okay though...when the line was up

Rain and DSL are like oil and water! We always see a massive upsurge in faults and disconnections during wet weather :(

We don't have the ability to do that directly, and we have been assured that ASSIA should be doing these sync stabilisations automatically.

I last heard that Telkom's call centre staff also have the manual option removed, so I think ASSIA will be running things dynamically. I like the idea, but let's hope it can do in practice what we expect in theory.

I did (what I consider) to upgrade my router first to the TP-Link Archer D7 AC1750, not sure if this is in the ballpark you are referring to. It manages to sync at roughly 3.3-3.4mb whereas my older DLink got to about 2.6mb

What is strange is that the TP-Link syncs higher than what it consider as being attainable.

Anywhere from 10ms to 40ms can be expected and is the additional latency considered to fall within the expected range when moving to interleaved. A few factors not in ISP control influence it...

What should I do then? Currently I am synced at 3328, but the router says the max attainable is 3188. My SNR is 5 and att is 56.5

Sounds like your line quality is poor. Also depends on what profile you are on. You must be on 4Mbps but if your sync rate is 3328 and your stats are that poor, you may even need to go down to 2Mbps for a solid line. Both SNR and ATT are well out of range here.

Can you PM me?

My only problem with you guys at the moment, is that my data is running out. :D
