Afrihost poor speeds

So have I, only downloaded 24 gigs last month but ended up being throttled to 6KBps from the 20th of last month, this excludes the non existence of browsing.

Fair enough! I do not doubt that there are many others in a similar position as well.

Right now I'm getting 31kB/s on a torrent while browsing and using VPN back to the office!

As you said, so far I'm lucky. :p

i think they made alot of people unhappy with this,

its ridiculous, they are wasting our money, cauz while we are paying for a 4mb line we getting 512 speeds,

i am gonna try mweb out

I'm getting 31KB/s on a 4M line! It's something I can't live with, considering that just last month, before they introduced the "punishment based on previous download amounts", I was downloading at between 395-415KB/s . Afrihost told me, clearly, that my account is being "managed". I had no choice but to cancel. They also demonstrated a "Telkomnistic attitude" by ignoring my complains about their poor service after hours, despite promising response times of "within an hour", etc.
I refuse to pay R500/month for that kind of K@K

I would have done the same as you!!!

Sigh... I won't get refunds right? Pro rate? I have to live with this the entire month?

I is starting to sound as if their 7% is more like 70% of users getting throttled to death, glad I moved to Mweb.

Like I said before, it seems the strategy is to eliminate all uncapped accounts

Mine is also flying so far. However i have cancelled because of their T&C's constantly changing.

So, if the current Top 7% leave AH, do they then create a new Top 7% list?

They don't have to leave, they are simply not allowed to remain in the top percentiles, (all the time) allowing another percentile group to move to the top. AH are attempting to achieve a Pareto efficient usage distribution among their users.

I've had an excellent month (386k line), so will have to see how this month pans out.

This form of throttling should only be used if you have an unshaped service... Afrihost should learn from MWEB how to setup proper shaping then they don't have to worry about "abuse" as the bulk download protocols only get the "leftover" capacity on the network.

Right now Afrihost is shaping(badly) and throttling... one or the other guys, one or the other!

I am going to wait until the World Cup is over - That is IF the tourney might have an influence on the network... I have a 4Mbits line too.

Just after 10pm on Sunday (4 July) night:

If I plug in the account of my Pay-as-you-go Afrihost account I get 3.4Mbits.

This is a constant problem- 10%-20% of normal speed is frakking annoying.

So I guess the ISP of choice is MWEB?

I am getting over 400KB/s on normal HTTP and mail downloads, consistently. I don't believe that the soccer has anything to do with the low speeds. I am much more inclined to believe that Telkom have some seriously over-utilised exchanges.

I think I get these good speeds especially after hours because a) I live close to the exchange but also because b) the exchange I am on is in an area with a lot of businesses, who are not using their lines at night.

That's my 5c worth.

But like I said: If I type in my PAYG account from Afrihost I get 3.4Mbits, if I type in my Uncapped 4Mbits package from Afrihost I get 0.4Mbits. Now I know that there is a higher contention ratio (etc), but during the week day this number fall as low as 0.1Mbits (!). So I am basically paying R500 for a R200 service (384Kbits). I feel that being a power user (70-100GB/p.m the last 3 months) I understand that I get the brunt of the shaping on the Uncapped, but this is ridiculous. I don't know, maybe I am still riding the wave of excellent service I received from them the previous couple of months, but if this nonsense keeps up after 11 July I am definitely closing my account with them and going to a bigger ISP that can deliver their products.

What I am doing currently is that I plug in my PAYG account during business hours (need the reliability) and plug in the Uncapped at night when I am surfing, youtubing, groovesharking and getting the latest episode of shows that don't show here.

Did you see my earlier post? Your uncapped account is now being "managed" (Afrihost's euphemism for throttling) due to previous heavy downloads. I'm in the same boat, and have canceled my account.

Have cancelled also, but are stuck with this **** till the end of the month. Done 1.1 GB this month and I can hardly even browse, ie can't even get to sites like http://www.speedtest.net/. Times out most of the time so slow it is.

I ****ing hate them so much. I'm sure if I see an afrihost employee I'd kick the living **** out of him.

Afrihost is worst than Telkom and thats saying allot

I have access to two AH accounts, one is 15GB acc the other 30GB acc. On the first account no International is possible, no MSN, Skype, etc. On the 30GB acc, NO PROBLEMS and full line speed of 450kbps on downloads. What gives?

One day, 350 years from now we might see this here. Thou I don't know how much its gonna help when you will be throttled to 9600 modem speeds after using the line for a few seconds...
