So got my Rain 5G today and it's pretty decent speeds and low latency. Downgrading my Afrihost 200Mbps fibre to the 10Mbps line as a backup connection. Latency to EU on Rain 5G is pretty decent. 168ms to Amsterdam.

I'm about 1km from the tower. Averaging 400Mbps. 250m from the tower averaging 600Mbps. I'm sure if you are right next to the tower 800Mbps+

5G is definitely a great technology, and I'm pretty excited about the possibilities. Still believe that fibre is the best solution for power users though. We've seen the impact adding a few high speed/volume users can have on a network, so it will be interesting to see how 5G will hold up in reality vs theory.

Haha yeah I'm a bit of a power user so yeah got 5G to compare. We hear 5G is not a competitor for fibre ect but it can be and I'm just the guy to test it. It's completely uncapped and unshaped which is nice. It's R1000 per month so well priced too.
I would still like to have my Vumatel 1Gbps line though but Openserve is the only network and limited to 200Mbps so yeah let's see.

From the research I saw it does show that 5G can support higher density at high speeds (something like 1 million people at speeds of 150Mbps). I think that's great for people without fibre, but it's not going to be better than a stable fixed landline.
1Gbps is pretty cheap now, considering we were paying something similar for 200Mbps last year. And given IoT requirements, etc it's going to become more and more practical (and necessary).
Hopefully I'll be on 100Gbps by then

How will you manage with that upload seeing that you use cloud storage quite frequently?

Yeah that is why I will use for like 2 month to check if I can manage. I will just use a vps to do the heavy lifting

I followed the WA support staffs guide and uploaded the firmware from the .co.za site and it said invalid firmware. The point was not how smart I am but rather that their support should know giving out Russian DIR-825s that the co.za firmware doesn't work."says Vendor Russia" - the "correct link" is .ru so russian as well.

No, THIS is the correct one. Mine was shipped with 3.0.6 by factory:

Mine is the G1 revision.
My R1 also arrived with fw v1.0.0. While significantly more stable than the abortion that was my G1, the 5ghz still regularly falls over at least 2-3 times per week.
Today I loaded this test build onto my R1. Once I'm satisfied it hasnt caused any major issues I'll share a link
