Afrihost - Pure Fibre Feedback Thread

True. It’s tricky, but you’d probably need ISPs to not support the FNO to incentivise another FNO to move in.

Frogfoot is damaging Afrihost’s reputation, but they aren’t seemingly doing anything to force a change.

IPv6 has been absolutely solid and very useful for my NAT IPv6 only virtual servers. Major win for Afrihost to be pushing this so quickly and having it transparent to the customer.

I just hope dedicated IPs don't go away. CGNAT is fine for most but there's a small chunk of your client base that still needs one @AfriNatic

Help please... why does my router tell me quite often after loadshedding that I need to activate my line again and that sign in is required for my router?

Now tonight after signing in once again web pages don't want to load properly...

Ipconfig shows me this:
Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

But a MyBroadband speed test shows high speeds:

But then even after this things are not happy...

Morning,

The activation page usually only loads when our DHCP server has seen a new mac address from you.

Please make sure that no mac address is leaking to the ONT for our DHCP to pick it up. Might be the router that is also leaking them.

@AfriNatic is there any cause or issue for the intermittent high latency to europe since yesterday evening ? Has been an ongoing issue at least once a week, for 2 to 3 hours, but now this is going on 13 hours non stop.

Morning,

Do you have a trace route for me to look at?

@AfriNatic, I had my fibre conduit interfered with by contractors on my property (the junctions were separated in two places). Simultaneously, I lost service and broadband lights on ONT, but router lights are still on.

I’m trying to get a technician in to test that everything is okay (considering the intermittent issues previously), but your support guys seem intent on pushing this out for as long as possible.

I’ve been 100% down for 18 hours now. Please can I somehow get someone to check the line on my side of the fence, if nothing, for my sanity…?

Over a week with intermittent connectivity. By intermittent, it’s 99.9% up, but two or three times a day connection would drop for a minute.

Plays havoc with connection to work VPN & extended data queries though.

The most frustrating part is then the beige support, incapable of comprehending that this is completely random, yet being unable to progress because I can’t do trace routes etc. at the instant it drops.

Things have escalated now, somewhat. No Service & Broadband lights on ONT since yesterday PM: so a completely outage. Suspect this is a separate issue, but you know things are bad when it’s easier to get progress from City Power than your ISP.

Can you drop me a pm with your email so I can follow up for you.

Static and public IP's won't go away but we might introduce a charge for for them later on as resources gets more strained.

Actually I see an increase in IPv4 latency to EU vs IPv6 which is low. Let me see what is going on. Will revert as soon as I have feedback.

Morning,

Can you check how the connection is doing today?
The issue is gone for now however, the test below was done at 9.56am. The the issue comes and goes.

Edit: Spoke too soon. As soon as I posted this the issue is back again

Actually, from what people write on the forum Openserve is probably the most stable FNO in the country.
The Openserve === Telkom is a bit of a misconception.
Yes, Openserve is technically owned by Telkom, but it's a completely separate company, ran differently, purely focussing on the infrastructure and don't deal with customers directly - that's why you have Afrihost to do that for you.

Personal experience:
Have fibre for exactly 11 months today.
100mbps/50mbps, Openserve, Afrihost.
I always get > 90mbps down and > 45 upload mbps on speed tests.
Had downtime once due to the aerial cable that was broken off outside our house by wild vervet monkeys (KZN), they fixed it in under 24 hours.
Sure local latency is a little higher than Vumatel for example (Openserve get 20ms between Durban and JHB, Vumatel gets around 14ms).
International it's pretty much the same and most depend on your ISP anyway.
Few months ago, we had a power outage in town that lasted 3 days and the Internet stayed up the whole time (we have solar panels + battery at home).

So anyway, I think you're being unnecessary fussy. There's no contracts, so it might be worth trying out.
Thank you for the feedback and info.
It is appreciated, and I can confirm that according to the forum Openserve feedback has been mostly positive.

It is obviously not just the Telkom "issue", I will also be dropping down from 100/100 to 100/50.

I actually use my upload... likely more than the average user.

Sure, fussy, but there are a bunch of things to consider, the issue with Octotel according to Afrihost, is not the same issue I have been experiencing (I have been able to test this with other Octotel lines with different ISP's, there is /was obviously an issue as per other posts on this forum, but not as extreme / frequent as my specific case) and has / was not addressed correctly so 2 months + of issues and poor service and paying full price for not being able to use a service fully.
I was told that Afrihost and Octotel are aware of the issue whatever that means.

I guess if Openserve was suggested a month or more ago I may have considered it, I reported the issue to ISPA yesterday for mediation, you can only be lead in circles / stay cordial for so long...

Totally understand.
Likewise, I have my whole computer permanently sync'd up to iCloud and as a developer push and pull data from Github repositories all day long.
And sure, there are times where I think "dang, I should've stayed on the 200/100 or 500/250 plan when I upload a new 10gb file to iCloud".
But I'll happily wait a little longer for a large file upload, rather than having inconsistent internet.
