Afrihost reduces uncapped ADSL prices

Ja, there seems to be two 4mb uncapped options available, one with Afrihost but throttled to 4mb and the other also with Afrihost but via IS and at max line speed. Just requested the IS 10mb option although the salesman suggested the 4mb Afrihost version was better....??? Possibly the IS rolling usage policy being the issue with the IS version of uncapped....??

Indeed. Seems the line is throttled to 4mb though, despite the earlier euphoria, but no shaping thus far.

Ummm this might make me leave mweb. I have been praising mweb for months/year now but recently the torrents during the day are downloading around 21KB/s (4MB adsl) use to be anything from 150 - 380KB/s. I thought it was just a temporary thing but it has been about a week now. R100 saving is a pretty good saving.

Be aware people are reporting throttling of torrents on Afrihost... Somewhere around 50k/sec?
 
Afrihost please make a 6meg uncapped account.

I'm not going to run a 10meg account on my 7meg line.

Nope. It's in the toilet again. My 4mbps Afrihost uncapped is so throttled at 80GB usage for the month to date that I can only effectively browse the web. Normal downloads max out at 16KB, never mind anything else. Pure kaka.

I don't use torrents, but there is big time throttling on anything other than browsing at the moment. Seems everything was fantastic in the weeks leading up to their big price reductions announcements, and now they've turned off the juice.

I echo this aswell, i won from a generous member on here to take over the rest of the account, 1MB Afrihost uncapped and he only used 80GB and now it is severely throttled. I don't mind since i never pay for it but i will certainly not support these accounts. If one immediately switches to their capped free GB account, its like someone turned the fresh juice extractor on, beeg difference.

I have a feeling that its no more about the quality but quantity of people you can snatch wasting their money with these iSPs now, i am specifically talking about Afrihost Uncapped and MWEB uncapped. Say what you want but MWEB is gone to poopoo on their uncapped product.

I only forsee them (MWEB) doing an upgrade to their core network towards END June, this is based on customers querying about the FREE 512 > 1MB upgrades and 1MB>2MB upgrades that are coming. Granted they not supported on all exchanges but a public uproar is undeniably going to happen.

For now the most stable accounts are the capped accounts from these providers or if you willing, a Ti uncapped account ;-).

What do you guys think?

Afrihost's uncapped accounts are definitely faster, but still too costly, even with the big price reductions. For the same as the 4mbps uncapped you can get a 50GB capped account (approx R400) - but if you're planning on using more than 100GB price starts getting uncomfortably over the R1k mark, in fact R1585 for 200GB...

And what they DON'T make clear IMHO is that the topup prices are much more expensive than the capped rate!! It's all very well advertising 50GB capped at < R8 per GB but is it fair that the topup is then R29 per GB when you hit the cap???

Also, buyer beware, if you signup for a capped account now, they PRO RATA the cap for the remainder of the month so you won't get your capped amount at all!!! To be fair, they also pro rata the subscription, but this isn't the point if you need the 50GB because the "uncapped" account is unusable.

I'm actually wondering now if it wouldn't work out much cheaper to pay for two uncapped accounts and alternate them so that when one hits the ridiculous rolling usage cap you can just switch.

The whole capped vs uncapped thing is actually a little disingenuous but serves to illustrate the point that the only difference between Afrihost "capped" and "uncapped" is that the capped account works according to a calendar month before the cap is applied, while the "uncapped" account works on a rolling window period before it is capped - the only thing that makes it "uncapped" is that they keep the window period and the cap amount a secret.
