Just a heads up for anyone thinking about joining afrihost with the intention of streaming from sites such as hulu and Netflix etc:

I raised a support ticket for poor streaming performance on my 4mbps afrihost line (constant buffering and low quality) and data package and received the following response:

"I trust you are well.

Netflix services are usually not supported by our
network so usually it would be giving problems and
losing the connection.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Regards"

Afrihost, I'm really on the verge of cancelling now. For the last two weeks, my international bandwidth has been slow (as I've provided many speedtests and examples) and still no resolution. I've posted a flurry of examples that show it's not my line (as even my Afrihost Capped account works perfectly). I don't understand how something as important as "all international bandwidth" can break so quickly but take so long to resolve.

Please guys, I've been super patient and accommodating of this, but it's enough now.

Thats why I only use their prepaid cap accounts! Their "uncapped accounts" just don't live up to what they make it out to be. I'd say go to OW if you want more bang for you buck mate.. Good luck.

Wow that is quite a statement from them. I've been happy with Afrihost since I joined them a couple of months ago but a statement like that is very worrying.

What are you using to stream? Go to Netflix and set your account to SD quality on a 4Mb line. It's just not fast enough for HD so it might be trying to swop to HD and that is what is causing the buffer.

Erm... Netflix isn't a locally accessible service under normal conditions, so they're under no obligation to support your attempts to connect to it. It'll work, but don't expect support from any local ISP if you run into niggles.

We all know that. I just want to know if I will be able to stream the service or not.. If not I am not interested in spending my money for something that will not work is all.

I know, but it is still a legal and legitimate use of the bandwidth I pay afrihost for so i expected at least some interest from their side.

I just found the horrid indignation a bit comical. 'Course it works; my good few months of evenings filled with Netflix says so. Just don't expect constant 720p streams on a 4mb line. ;)

@AfriGuy

What kind of priority does VOIP rate on your 1Mbps uncapped rate?

Yea ive set it to sd but i get equally poor performance from atv3, Samsung smart app and xbox. I've tried switching from unblockus to unotelly and even a different modem. Works ok somtimes but mosly it buffers every 5 mins or so.

Yeah, that's not right. While I agree that we don't support Netflix, especially becuase you need to use outside DNS, we are always committed to giving our clients the best possible experience to the best of our ability.

Drop me a PM and let's get this sorted out :(

VoIP and other real times services get top priority. :)

Still on 2MB uncapped BUsiness at home and have no complaints. Other than my congested Exchange.

Now with your 3G offering I can start actually using voip services.

Eish this is not good as I purchase afrihost capped data to stream netflix when my uncapped account acts up and thus far it has worked with no problems with your capped data :(

From what I can see, different DNS services yield different results. Some are better for Netflix and not so great for Hulu, and vice versa. And there are quite a few out there. That's why it's difficult for us to support. But we will always try our best to do so. Best would be for all this geolocation stuff to get revised so that anyone, anywhere, can use any service they like. EVerything is billed in dollars anyway, right?

That's my opinion anyway :)

Bear in mind that it's more than a dns. It's also a proxy service. Just changing dns servers can't make you miraculously appear from another country. So you'll also need to check latency and bandwidth to the proxy service, as well as its capacity...
