mmm. Even with a direct download I'm only getting 132KB/s on a 4mb account.

Steam has been extremely slow on Afrihost since Dec 2013, and I am on a Business Uncapped account.

Definitely shouldn't be the case with a Business account, have you looked at Protocol Prioritisation?

Could be due to shaping, have you double checked your ClientZone?

I've checked but unfortunately the only thing I can see is the Shaping percentages. Not sure if there is anything else I should be looking at.

The shaping percentages would indicate that there is shaping on your line. A direct download would definitely be subject to shaping, though it would be less severe than shaping on torrents or other P2P.

It shows as being deactivated, so my line should be running at 100%. Steam used to download 1.4-1.6GB per hour, now I am lucky if it downloads 200MB per hour.

At present it says
Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

So if I understand that correctly it means that I'm only getting that percentage of my line speed for those tasks?

Also how long does the shaping last, and how is it calculated? (Total downloaded, network usage, etc)
I've only been with Afrihost for about 5 days so I'm not sure how things work around here.

Thanks very much for the feedback everyone, seems like it is a clear choice for me, bye bye Telkom halloooo Afrihost.
Welcome to the happy little family of AH users, Rytlock. As you've seen already AfriMan will hand out great gifts to all of us  since he's a strong believer in everybody should get what they want. Mhm. For sure.
And although there might be some advantages of AH businesss over AH regular, ping surely isn't one of those. Ping is a matter of network, not account. Let's just say AH is on the best backhaul in SA, which is MTN. In my tests I found to have much worse ping on TI. I dunno if AH is the absolute bestest ISP in SA ... but you could be with much worse.
Troublefree since a couple months now.

At the moment all our IPC's are running very well, contention should be minimal. My own line tests are showing full speeds on downloads - despite the fact that a falling tree severely molested my line :(

It lasts for as long as demand is excessively high. As demand decreases, we calculate the rate of decrease and how much we can unshape to allow us to always give maximum bandwidth back to clients. We start from the lightest users first, unshaping the heaviest users last - and all the degrees in between

Correct. I do believe that everyone should get what they want (which includes a pony at some stage of their lives - Gian has already promised me one).

Also the ping thing - agreement :)

Afrihost - bestest ISP in SA - I dunno .... you cut me deep, you cut me real deep back there :(

No one has helped me in the last 3 days. It isn't exchange congestion as capped is perfect. Very disappointed in what I am receiving here. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/737118849 . I'm getting fed up and am willing to move to another ISP.

I'm sorry to hear that no-one is helping you.

Can you drop me a PM so I can make sure you get some specific and direct assistance with this?

be careful with that philosophy :p

Also you can't have a horse without a hound ;)

In other news you guys might need to send your awesomeness capes to loan to Telkom Internet as they seem to be battling a bit (and I imagine quite a few of you 1Gb capped accounts are in use)
