Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I don't know about that... Mobile is facing its own challenges right now, like spectrum. No different to IPC if you ask me.

The fact that TV operators are so slow to move over DTTV is also hindering mobile operators because they're waiting for that spectrum to be freed up and in the mean time they're left with nothing else to do but re-farm already available spectrum.

There are definitely a lot of challenges, and I don't think DSL has one foot in the grave by any means. But the growth on mobile is pretty much over 10 times that of DSL, so it's a huge market for broadband.

Another example of what my line perf looks like. Zero shaping.

Now come 01:00 this shoots through the roof and hits flat line speed of 440kB/s.

AfriTeam, can you shed ANY light on this? Youtube, tor, nzb, speed tests...they are all the same maxing at this speed.

Tracert's show sub 10ms on my exchange. Again...line stats are rock solid. No outside influence. Feels like a QoS limiter is being used.

Any thoughts on this please?

I know you might find this is an insult to your intelligence, but is your firewall capping speed? What happens if you connect your router directly to your pc?

Hi,

AfriMan - when are you guys going to update your pricing to those that the Axxess users enjoy?

I see 10mbps uncapped @ Axxess = R375 whilst Afrihost = R797... It doesn't make sense... Why should I have to jump to your sister company to enjoy the pricing benefit?

Sorry, confused you with another user.

However, I so find it strange that it is only you that experience these exact issues. What is your setup like

PC -> Router -> Modem -> pots filter -> wall.

I have NO phone in my house.

Here is a breakdown of the troubleshooting I have done so far.

Reset both router and modem numerous times to factory defaults. Tested with direct connection to modem, modem in bridge mode, modem not in bridge mode, different routers + same modem, different routers with different modem and lastly with and without pots filter.

All yielding the same results. Also. My line runs 100% from 01:00 till 17:30 odd. Then this speed limitation is put in place. It is not my equipment and it is not my line as my speeds run over 400kB after 01:00 and between 300 - 400 during the day...up till 17:30 ish.

I have contacted Telkom and they confirm that they have upgraded the backhaul of my exchange and indeed I could see vast improvement as my tracert's to sites show a ping of less than 10 on my exchange and low pings on all hops. I have tripple checked my router and I have no QoS running on my system at all that limits data to my pc.

This is bloody frustrating I tell you. Here is another pic taken just now.

Whether it's youtube or a download...does not matter. Line maxes at 1mb speeds.

Axxess are running a special until January 2014. We generally don't like to change prices on our clients, we'd rather do free data (like our Mobile promos). We're always reviewing our offerings to make sure we are the best in the market ;)

We'd have to check what your line is synced at and what your profile is set to. Drop me a PM please :(

Hi Afri.

Line is syncing at 4095 per my line stats. No Shaping.

Did drop you a pm...after testing with Telkom guest account and speed testing on SAIX.net...I get the SAME 1mb speed results. It seems it is NOT uncapped or capped account from you guys. So you can breath easy hehe. NOT an Afrihost problem. *sigh*

So you won't be announcing new ADSL prices anytime soon? I am asking because I was thinking of getting the 10mb uncapped bundle, but will wait if prices will be changing?

From their site:
will be revised in January 2014. (or maybe not)

Why are we shaped so bad at 4am?
Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P
On both our accounts.

same here i heard that because afrihost dropped its prices there are more capped users they are failing to keep up with the demand
so basically down hill for the uncapped users who have been with them since the beginning
slow speeds and shaping we accept during the day not at 4 am in the morning
instead of trying to be the cheapest on the market they should rather focus on the best service
. being extremely cheap and having the best service dont always go hand in hand .
i stuck with the crappy speeds when they moved to mtn . Back then they at least acknowledged they had a problem ,

Why are you running through a modem first? Why don't you try directly plugging your phone line into your router?

Also, make sure your PC is not running any limiters of any kind, or your router is not QOS'ing.

If you read my previous reply you will notice I have tested that.

And I run my modem bridged, as having two NATs up is a waste. Also I like being able to just swap out my router and leave the modem as is. Makes it easier to upgrade to newer wireless tech in routers AC+ etc.

And for the topic of this discussion a router on it's own cannot connect to the internet. You connect through an ADSL modem. I don't have a dual device that incorporates a modem/router in one.

:(

We started unshaping pretty steadily from around midnight - from 2am we had pretty much unshaped at maximum. Some of the very heaviest users would have been shaped lightly, but otherwise most should have been running at full on downloads and P2P.

Please drop me a PM so I can check why you might have not been unshaped :(

That doesn't sound great IMO. So assuming the other ISP's change prices, they'll be significantly cheaper then AH. Doesn't make sense. And you can't really give free data to uncapped.
I for one wouldn't mind being bumped to 2mb for the price of 1mb like Axxess is going to do.

Although it does all depend on whether Axxess will keep those prices permanent or bump them after in January. In which case I see how it makes sense for AH not to. Though I'd still be interested how the upgrades will affect uncapped accounts in terms of benefit.

Of course it's all moot until this shaping issue is sorted. Right now I'd just like to get back to normal. This makes me a sad panda :(
For the record, I've been shaped pretty much 24/7 for the lest week at least. I'm relaly not seeing much in the way of unshaping at all. So it's clear that the shaping is not a consistent experience for all users.

I can't say at the moment, but we are obviously aware of the Axxess promo. we're always reviewing our pricing - I'm pretty sure we'll have something awesome to offer soon ;)
