Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Same here Zertop. Funky uncapped speeds are back. Youtube streaming impossible above 360p. No shaling applied. Turbo charging did nothing. Same speeds all the way. Capped account again was 100% perfect. Sigh.

I can also echo this. 360p? I wish. 144p was buffering last night. No shaping applied. I was too lazy to change to my capped account so just went to bed.
Normal browsing were fine and my torrent ran at full line speed.

Nevermind, I should only check these things after my coffee. I think the torrent was probably not too highly seeded so might have been slow. Also, the last item in NNTP was 484, and it only had 446 left.

Apologies for crying wolf.

LOL - no problems with a little wolf crying if it keeps us on our toes :)

Dear Afriman

I hope you are doing good. But I wanna ask you are you still going to look at your prices(especially the 10mb uncapped). i have been tempted by other ISP. I still love you Afrihost. but its not you, its me.

PS I Love You :)

Afrihost seems to have forgotton that they used to shape, haven't been shaped in like 20 days now. But why does afrihost have the most expensive accounts now? I would have expected better then their recent price cuts.

We're going to be reviewing our prices and product once the Telkom finished the upgrade process. I think we'll make a splash about it when we do :)

May I suggest that you offer 10mb uncapped for R1/month to the first person who suggests it. Well would you look at that, that's me :)

Hahah - self-fulfilling competitions. I think maybe we should look at a Make a Wish promotion ;)

You get it. Just the other day I banged my toe on the coffee table and it really hurt. I think that qualifies me for Make A Wish.

We're being compared with throttled packaged in most cases, which is pretty unfair since our Uncapped is shaped according to demand - not throttled or shaped according to specific times :(

Thanks for the feedback.

We would love to set up some truly unbiased tests of ADSL in South Africa. If you are willing/able to assist, please drop us a line. Unless you can think of another way (than rolling our own massive test bench) to accurately measure all of the variables that set ADSL providers apart for a more "fair" comparison?

I think you make a good point here. You pretty much only see comparisons based on price. Anyone who's been online long enough and tried different providers knows how many factors play into it. The average consumer see cheap price and runs off little knowing that they're losing elsewhere.
I think this might be pretty valuable to the consumer. Even if you know what's going on, choosing an ISP can be frustrating. I can only imagine how it must suck for the average Joe.

Someone needs to do a toptenreviews.com style comparison. Stack packages against each other based on criteria x with a final overall for best.
Not that I'm volunteering, I'm just the ideas man.

I believe all these factors are debated in the ISP of the year thing

I am getting very sluggish http and https speeds today. I haven't been able to download at full speed on https all day (max I reached was 250kb/s, it went down to 100kb/s, now its 14kb/s). Its the first time ever that I have had an issue with my uncapped 4-meg account.

Here is a tracert I did:
Tracing route to www.google.co.za [74.125.233.95]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms router.asus.com [192.168.1.1]
2 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms 105-236-12-193-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.236.12.193]
3 8 ms 15 ms 10 ms ipc-recieve-jh-3a.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.178.29]
4 9 ms 8 ms 8 ms qux-jh-dca-2.za-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.165.115]
5 17 ms 8 ms 8 ms jh-dca-2.za--qux-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.165.114]
6 9 ms 20 ms * 41.181.139.109
7 32 ms 13 ms 9 ms 72.14.194.74
8 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 64.233.174.57
9 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms jnb01s02-in-f31.1e100.net [74.125.233.95]

As far as I can see, its not my exchange, and I don't think its MTN. So I'm not sure what is going on.

What is your shaping policy currently on?

18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P. But I've always gotten near line speed (4 meg) on https downloads. Day or night (which is perfect for me to work from home). But now I'm getting terrible speeds. So its perplexing.

Strange - the download speeds you are getting are correct for your shaping policy. HTTP Downloads should and have always been shaped

I understand and accept that, but http secure (https) is going really slowly as well. Afrihost hasn't ever shaped that port (443) before. Unless they have decided to changed their policy on that.

Not to poke fun at a truly awesome project - Make A Wish really do amazing stuff.

But we'll find a way to soothe the banged toes of the world somehow :)

I think we could never produce any results which could be seen as unbiaised, so we'll leave that to the tech journos out there who are doing their reviews. It's not all just specs and comparisons, it about ab experience which makes sense and gives you a warm fuzzy feeling about the ISP you choose. We focus on the fuzzy factor as much as the technical stuff :)
