Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

In my experience, if it downloads it gets shaped. However there are some SA mirrors where I once downloaded Ubuntu at 500KB/s where everything else was 30KB/s

It's possible that some traffic is mis-classified. But if it's a non-realtime service, it should be shaped when shaping is present on the account :)

Afriman is there any chance you can go a bit lighter on shaping on the local steam servers and Linux servers? Bandwidth on both of them is local.

The bandwidth over local or overseas doesn't really bother is, cos it's already broken out of Telkom's network at the IPC. It's the IPC that forces us to shape when demand is high, not the local/overseas split :(

AFAIK they host one in JHB but there is another unspecified JHB server as well. There's a long list of servers in steam.

Someone on mybroadband last said that they no longer host it locally, and that those options in steam is just something that steam hasn't removed yet. Don't know if its true, but it does sound plausible.

I selected the JHB server on steam and downloaded 2 games via that. JHB (uses p2p ports) JHB IS GAMING (was the fastest) JHB MWEB (Untested)

Didn't Steam change to Akamia CDN, AFAIK there is an Akamia node on the MTN network ???

Afriman here at work I also tested some streams that normally buffers on Afrihost, even when unshaped. Tested on mweb and nothing buffers. Why is this? Both 4mbps accounts.

Really don't know to be honest. Maybe drop them an email on their support but let us all know :)

There is an Akamai Node on the MTN network, but I really don't know all that much about it how it selects which content to cache. I'll try to corner one of the MTN tech fundi's to ask some questions about this :)

If I'm not mistaken, the server should monitor the connections running through it and find which files are being accessed most, and cache those :)

What is the situation regarding the ADSL account upgrades from 1 Mb to 2 Mb, will 1 Mb account holders be restricted to 1 Mb until the end of the month, or will we be upgraded when Telkom upgrades the lines? Sorry if this is a repeat question, looked a few pages back didn't see anything.

I think that's the basic concept. I don't know if there are business to business agreements to cache specific content like Steam downloads.

Afrihost will not be providing any free DSL account upgrades. If you want to move to a 2mb DSL package, you'll have to pay more. This is separate from your DSL line upgrade.

We are not upgrading data accounts at the moment, so once your line upgrades, you can go into ClientZone and upgrade your data.

Otherwise we will also send you a mail when Telkom confirms the line has been upgraded, so that you can decide.

You can also choose to downgrade your line in most instances to opt for a saving rather than extra speed :)
