Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Why is it that my download speed from news servers never exceed 14Kbps? I have a 4Mb uncapped home account.
This is even when downloading from Afrihost news server. Turbocharge does nothing.

Have you already checked if your account is being shaped, and if you get the same results on an unshaped Free GB account. It could be that the news server, or the download/file is slower than usual. We'd need to test further to find exactly what is happening.

Why am I staring at that info since 1/4 hour? Router is reset and all is done but I don't dare killing that site. :wtf:

Remember that if you submit the request from the line being reset, the tool will lose connectivity and can't always regain the connection. It is supposed to report an error, but sometimes it does weird stuff :(

http downloads are following the shaping protocols. It looks like i get a major burst in nntp speeds at some odd hours of the morning as I managed to download about 5Gb between 1am and around 7am.

HTTP downloads are shaped when demand is high, but usually to a much lesser extent than P2P. You shouldn't usually see the same level of shaping, unless there are other factors like server load at play.

So Afrihost isn't net neutral yet ;-)

AfriMan, seeing that you've not come 'round to the business thread yet, any idea why my business account was butts over the weekend? Speedtest.net's test were fine - aren't they always; traces were fine... but anything other than multithread downloads was horrid. P2P streaming was unusable, single-thread speed tests from testmy.net hovered around the 1mb mark on my 4mb account, YouTube buffered constantly...

05/25, 11h50, Pta East: AH dead in the water, cannot connect. Also, trying to access their website from tablet via 3g states ssl authentication issue, cannot open website View attachment 120619:mad::mad::mad:

As far as I know there were no issues with authentication in the North. Perhaps there was a Telkom issue in your area at the time?

Drop me a PM if you're still not able to connect :(

I'd need to go over the test results from your latency and throughput testing to give some input. As far as I know there were no problems. I ran some tests on torrents last night and Saturday and everything was pretty normal as far as I could tell at the time when I tested. I also didn't see any general latency on the network on my monitoring reports.

Line keeps dropping and internet cutting out since 3 or so this afternoon? Are there hassles in the Eastern Cape area by any chance?

Not that I know of. Do you know if the line itself was dropping or if your ISP account was being dropped?

Which area in the EC?

That's the annoyance, latency was fine; average of 15ms or so to local sites and the usual 180ms to 220ms to international sites. Single-thread throughput was the issue - as bad as what had me switch from 'home' to 'business' in the first place. The Monaco GP looked like it was done in claymation. :D

Will see if things have improved this evening, otherwise I'll set up a PC at home such that I can run some tests from work tomorrow.

Hi afriman. If I want to change packages to capped or uncapped business. What is best date to do this? Currently on home uncapped

So after reviewing my usage over the last few months I hardly go over 100gb in a month. This partly because of downloads being shapped and partly because I dont have all that much I like to download. So two options. I can pay more and get business line and hopefully get more stuff downloaded. Or I can go capped and stick to 100 gb a month. Any suggestions?

It depends on your preference. I would say it sounds like you want to do more downloads and once you're on a capped package you'll probably end up running out of data. So maybe go for a bigger package (like go 100+100 instead of 50+50) or rather stick with Business Uncapped if you're happy to spend a little extra.

You'll already have missed the cut off for the billing run. Depending on the package you choose, the change may only come into effect at the end of next month - but best to submit your change request ASAP.

AfriMan that Critical Care account your guys gave me to test Nowvideo.sx with, really no point in that. The thing never buffers. Once I switch back to the Home Uncapped account it buffers. I can also monitor on my RB750 via winbox that it does not use P2P ports.

Ok. So when is the next cut off? Then I can still change next month. Still thinking about which package I will change to.

Please do run the tests anyway, always good to know even if things are working as they should.

Pretty odd if latency and throughput were fine on local. Sounds like something odd going on there :(

I think the idea is to give them as much comparative feedback as possible to they can determine what the material differences are in the accounts performance, to then match them to a setting or profile policy that could be affecting the performance on your regular account.

I have cancelled my afrihost account today after an entire weekend of being shaped to 18% download speeds even when i have only used 25gbs of data this month. i am tired of getting home and experiencing really crappy internet speeds. I used another providers test account last week and it was bliss. I am not getting what i am paying for any more

so long and thanks for all the fish.

The next cutoff will be the 25th of next month, but it depends on on the value of the new package you're changing to. If it's a higher value package, then it may take effect sooner.

Best to go into Clientzone and make the change and see what effective date it gives you :)
