Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I've hit a wall on my test account but I've moved 54gb since the 1st so to be expected yes?

2Mbp account + line. COMPLETELY eff'd on the 3rd day of this month. Like honestly. Please tell me what i need to do to get an answer, im getting so frustrated here with this now.

OK! I am now fed up with Afrihost!

Just spoke to the guys about my NNTP downloads running at 29.6KB!
REALLY!!!! 4 hours to get a 300MB file!!!!! OMG!! And I have a 4MB uncapped account!
They tell me that that is the way it is going to be and there is nothing they can do about it!

Afriman....

Is this now going to be a permanent thing with Afrihost?
If so, then it is pointless in having an uncapped account!

And to top it off, Google Earth is virtually unusable too!
LOL! I cannot even make a video call with Skype! Only audio!

I am still a new customer to Afrihost (3 months) and ever since the move to MTN, I have struggled along, hoping it would get better, because everybody raved about how great they are!

But now, everybody is leaving because of this throttling thing that is happening!

Please let me know what is actually going on, because there is myself and 17 of my friends, each on their own uncapped accounts and we are all not happy! We use it mostly for downloading and gaming (which is also not great!).

I do not think that's the fault of Afrihost.

Never claimed it was. I understand that providing high-speed ADSL in South Africa is extremely difficult (and expensive) mostly due to Telkom, but also due to South Africa's remote location compared to Europe and North America where most traffic goes to/from.

Someone just pointed out USA as an example of good internet connectivity. I just wanted to point out that USA has pretty poor internet connectivity compared to most European countries.

Well, it's a new month, and the first time I used my account this month was today. Thus prior to now I had 0 bytes transferred this month.

My connection is throttled to 128kbps (ie, 1/16th of the advertised 2Mbps).

I think your test account has a special (ie none) throttling setup, just like the test account I was given by Afrihost for the weekend.

and I thought QoS and Afrihost did not differentiate between local and international......

Yes the US and AUS has some really ****ty internet right there...

Yes, that's (Warner Cable) slow, expensive and poor quality compared to many places in Europe.

Firstly, they throttle your internet connection just like Afrihost do.[1]

Secondly, they will kick you off completely if you actually download stuff.[2]

And thirdly, that's 752 ZAR.[3]

Now, compare to the first two ISPs I could find in Denmark and Sweden:

Denmark: 663 ZAR[4] for a completely unmanaged 50Mbps VDSL connection[5] where you won't get kicked off if you download stuff.

Sweden: 425 ZAR[6] for a completely unmanaged 100Mbps fibre connection[7] where you won't get kicked off if you download stuff. Goes all the way up to 1Gbps if you want that.

So yes, internet connectivity in USA is crap compared to many other places.

Same goes for the Australian connections. Expensive, slow and capped.

I know there could be some issues today. We getting an unusually hectic demand for bandwidth. We are busy looking into this, and whether there is anything that can be done. Downloads may be pretty slow, but other services should continue as normal, latency should remain under control.

I haven't been following the thread much today, will try to do so when I can. PLEASE pop me a PM if there is anything urgent, and I'll make sure you get some assistance if I can't fix it for you myself.

I feel really really sorry for you guys. Glad I made the switch away from AH. I still have my backup AH 1GB capped account. Did not use it in November. I will be cancelling this as well before Christmas.

For the guys trying to download the latest patches and expansion pack for BF3 on PS3... rather use the PS3Proxy and do the download via Internet Download Manager or the like... Much, much faster and will resume downloads... The downloads are 1.8gb & 1.6gb respectively, so do yourself a favour on this...

+1. I am back to the paradise of "never shaped at ALL on the weekend" with IS. I have so missed it. Guys if you are getting shaped on the weekend, just jump ship. Trust me, IS based ISPs dont even know what shaping means on the weekend or after hours
