Interesting that you say Astraweb allows 8 connections, I went to check, their main page says 20 and their members page says 50!
My news reader in the FAQ's says that UseNet standard is 4 connections. I don't have a problem with 30 from Astraweb but news.afrihost.co.za won't allow more than 4 ...........connections refused.

Using private server only here, better performance for my buck

AfriMan,

Please ask the app guru's to make the afrihost app rotatable. (Landscape mode)

Its super-dof when using it on my transformer and having to turn it lopsided to use the app.
Any ETA on when the other functions of client zone might become available in the app?

Tnx

Oh, i'm not sure what the limit is with Astraweb, i just use 8 connections as it seemed sufficient in terms of getting max speed. However, news.afrihost.co.za and almost every local news server only allow 4 connections. That includes Mweb, only 4 connections there too.

I also figured using like 30 connections on Astraweb and still only having 4 on afrihost would result in everything being downloaded from Astraweb which is not free. So if i can split downloads towards afrihost/local then my astraweb account last longer too. Anyhow, not sure how my NZB downloader determine where to download from , but i'm just happy if i see the downloads are nicely split between the servers.

Yup, I second that please - not so nice on tablets. Would be great to have it in landscape mode.

I have slow downloading speed from local sites. ;(

How long notice do you have to give, or can you just cancel at the end of the month, since it's a month-2-month contract?

Sorry to hear you're thinking of cancelling. It's best to do so before the billing run, which this month may start as early as the 22nd (due to the short month).

Our new IPC should be in place by 25th Feb at the latest, perhaps you'll consider staying until then. PM me so we can chat :)

Sounds like a great idea. I've passed it onto our guys. I'm not what the limitations/barriers are to getting that working, but let's see what they have to say :)

Well, I've had it.

With my Afrihost Uncapped account download going to hell for no particular reason in the last two weeks of Jan , I decided to swap back to an capped, UNSHAPED UNSHAPED UNSHAPED UNSHAPED account. I'm trying to download a 20mb indie game demo, and my speed on a 4mb line is 20kb/s through Firefox.

Afrihost, you're dead to me. Ever since this move over to MTN's network, I've had nothing but inconsistency in terms of reliability and speed. Unless you have a legitimate reason for why this is occurring other than shaping - and let's be clear, it IS shaping, since the same sites I've speedtested against in Steam's built-in browser outperform all my standard browsers by a massive margin - I will be cancelling my account and moving to another service provider.

EDIT And to be clear, my total downloads for Jan fell in the 60gb range. Hardly extensive abuse given Afrihost's "leaderboards".

It makes me truly sad to read this. Clearly we have failed to deliver good performance, and I understand that this is a very personal issue - not just about rands and cents. While we strive to deliver the best service and to constantly improve, we NEVER want any of our clients to feel stuck or trapped, we want to do everything in our power to make sure you get what you need.

There is certainly shaping on Uncapped products, but not on Capped products. As a matter of integrity we've never had any restrictions of capped ADSL. We guarantee unshaped, unmetered bandwidth on capped accounts.

I'd very much like you to PM me with some details so that I can check whether there is a general performance issue, or if we can find any other reason why you're capped account feels shaped.

That is a bit convenient don't you think? Some of us (like myself are willing to hang around and see if the new IPC makes any difference, but the date given by you guys are the same as the "cut-off" cancellation date. So in theory, if it's not working as promise, (which I really hope it does) I'm still bound to use Afrihost until the end of March.

I seem to recall that the "carrot" of the new IPC in Cape Town has regularly appeared in this thread and it's always around the cut off date of the billing cycle, so you just have to pay for another month to see if it's any better.

The new IPC was originally supposed to right after the switch from IS, then it turned out Cape Town wasn't getting the new IPC quite yet, I seem to recall we were told "end of November", which then became "maybe this year still", which became "not possible this year sorry, definitely January" which became "by February at the latest" and now, surprise, surprise, the magical date is at the billing cycle date towards the END of February... would you believe Afrihost this time around?

They are acting in character and exactly as one would expect. How can you complain about that :o

I never saw an "end of november" promise for IPC. Anyone who knows Telkom knows that you can't get that kind of delivery and commitment out of them. 25 Feb was the first firm date I recall seeing?

If you want to start tossing about accusations of underhandedness, best you start by quoting the posts where these specifics were promised.

Well nothing stops you from cancelling and then re-activating on the 26th (or later) IF things go according to plan. I don't think anyone here is "locked" into some contract where you can't cancel and return at any time?

I do it all the time myself, especially if there's some shakeup in the market in terms of prices or offerings. Fortunately for Afrihost, they tend to make changes quite often, and don't wait for Telkom to change prices before suddenly dreaming up of new products.

Well here's the first mention, if I have time I'll go through all 400 pages where there are numerous such references with more specific dates. This goes back to October last year, so forgive my cynicism:

We are definitely going to look at IPC in CT as soon as we are satisfied the network is stable.

We are pushing this from the highest levels, I can't give an ETA but we are aiming for this ASAP. I just don't want to give a date that we end up missing. Honestly it won't be days, but I'm hoping that week(s) rather than months will be the case. I really can't give a firm commitment, but things are being negotiated and pursued to sort this out.

25-10-2012 08:55 AM:

We haven't implemented IPC in Cape Town as yet, and from the sounds of it that will still be at least a month away, due to the Telkom actions required.

30-10-2012 01:10 PM (Note, after billing date - now not this year at all!!)

I'll be straight though - IPC in Cape Town is not going to happen this year, and we are exploring every possible route to getting a better solution until we do have that in place.

06-11-2012 02:09 PM - January mentioned - and not a new IPC, just an upgrade:

Adding capacity is not a simple act of buying a server or adding cables here and there. It requires sending extensive case studies and statistics and projections, which need to be approved. We have already done this by the way, to add capacity to CT & DBN, and more in JHB. MTN already have IPC in in all those areas, which is being used for their business service, so this being upgraded - it's not even a new IPC request, but we're told we'll be waiting at
least until January for that ball to get rolling :(

07-11-2012 03:16 PM - *Early* in the new year - ok well, I'll keep paying then:

1. Average latency in Cape Town has increased marginally (by about 50ms) as we don't have a Cape Town IPC yet. However, we will be getting an IPC in Cape Town early in the new year which should remedy this.

I don't see any dates mentioned. Do you?

To wit, there is a substantial difference between supposed cynicism and bandying about false accusations.

www.duckduckgo.com then "searchtopic" site:http://mybroadband.co.za

Let me know if it works because I have no need to search mybroadband. That "site:" works on other sites.

That Feb 25th is the only firm date that Telkom gave Afrihost way back in December already. For IPC in CapeTown.

I made no such accusations, I merely pointed out that we keep getting told it's around the corner and then it's not, at opportune times. You draw your own conclusions about there being any "accusations".

Maybe exact dates were not mentioned. But "weeks" were mentioned in October and I think we're pushing the envelope on "early new year" now.

This might not be an exact date, but maybe I should have understood "at least a month away" differently?
