How do you use the PS3proxy in order to get the full line speed? I played online with Afrihost prepaid and its perfect but uncapped struggled in the evening

Let me know your thoughts guys

well heres a guide.
Then i just download files on my pc using dap and following this guide.

Downloading Games, Demos and Game Patches from your PC then to your PS3

This method works really well and even allows you to use a download manger to download the files. Basically all you are doing is finding the link of the patch, demo or game. You can then download the file on your pc. After that is done you simply 'trick' your ps3 into thinking its downloading the file off the normal server but instead you redirect it to your pc's local address.

Now before I get asked a million times, please note that if you download a game or DLC or anything that requires a purchase you well need to have bought it on the store already. So if you think you are gonna be able to just get stuff for free you are wrong. The reason behind this is because the pay for stuff requires a key which is activated when you buy a game on the playstation network.

1. Download and Install PS3Prox (made by a local guy ) - links are provided in a post below (search "PS3 Prox")
2. Setup PS3 Prox
a) Make sure you are on the "Settings" tab
b) Select PS3 as the Mode
c) Click the “Get IP’s” button
d) The box below the button should now be populated with 1 or more IP Addresses
e) Select the IP Address that corresponds to your “Local Area Connection” IP Address
f) Enter in a Port Number (default (and recommended) is “8080” – will need to be an Open Port if you have a firewall installed).
g) Click “Save Settings” to save the settings, so next time you start PS3 Prox you will not have to run through the settings again (unless your IP Address changes).
3. Setup the PS3
a) On the PS3 go to Settings -> Network Settings
b) Go to “Internet Connection Settings” (Click “Yes” if it asks you if you want to continue)
c) Go and adjust/setup your Internet Connection Settings on the PS3/PSP
d) Under Select a Setting Method – Select “Custom”
e) Continue entering your Internet Settings as you would normally, until you get to the Proxy Server Screen
f) Under Proxy Server, select “Use”
g) For the Address, enter the same IP Address you entered in PS3 Prox
h) For the Port Number enter the same Port Number you entered in PS3 Prox (default is “8080”)
i) Continue through the Setup steps and Test the Connection
4. Get PS3 Game Patch Link
a) Start PS3 Prox (on the "Settings" tab) and go to the “Log” tab
b) Start the PS3 game
c) If an update is found, click “Yes” and look at the “Log” tab in PS3 Prox
d) Once the download starts you should see the download link in the “Log” tab, you can now Stop/Cancel the download on the PS3 – take note of the download link as you will need it later (the best thing to do is to Copy the link, then go to the “Replace Files” tab and click “Paste Link” then click “Save”)
e) Use the download link in the log tab to get the download of the patch and download the patch onto your PC
5. Update PS3 Game
a) Once downloaded, you can now update the PS3 Game
b) Make sure PS3 Prox is Started
c) Go to the “Replace Files” tab
d) Add a Description for the PSN Item
e) “Paste” the Game Patch download link into the ‘Download Link’ box – if it is not already there
f) Click “Browse” to locate the downloaded Patch File on your PC, click “Open”
g) Click “Add”
h) Go to the “Log” tab – just to see that it replaces the links
i) Start the PS3 Game
j) Again click “Yes” when asked to update
k) Now on the “Log” tab you should see the Original Download Link (i.e. the link you used to download the Firmware on the PC) as well as the Path to the

Firmware file on your PC, you will also notice on the PS3/PSP that the download is a lot faster.

NOTE: If you want to delete a PSN Item from the list, select the row (the whole row should be highlighted) of the PSN Item you want to Delete, then hit the “Delete” on your keyboard.

You can also use this to Update your PS3/PSP Firmware, install PSN Demo's and Full Games. Just simply instead of getting the game patch link go to the

Playstation store and start the download of the item that you want. Now get that link and repeat the normal method.

Thanks Gamer196 for both the app and the guide.

I tried downloading battlefield 1943 trial on my ps3 but took forever. using this methode with dap took me about 25 minutes.

Well - then shaping a 4MB line isn't uncapped 4MB either - because a 4MB line is capable of moving a certain amount of uncapped data a month, shaping it means it can't move that amount of data - hence it isn't 4MB uncapped.

True but the amount of physical data that traverse the wire is what they cannot cap for it to be true UNCAPPED.....

56K is also uncapped - even though the data moves a lot slower !

You see ?

Please don't redefine uncapped to your own purposes. Uncapped simply means you will not be cut off at a predetermined data amount

I'm not redefining it for my own purposes - 4MB uncapped means 4MB uncapped, not 4MB uncapped but shaped to 192KBs. But anyway - there are enough threads on that.

MWEB has worse shaping than Afrihost I believe!

I thought Mweb advertised it as unshaped?

I'm still waiting for my 'free' account to test.

EDIT: Oh wait, they called it protocol prioritisation .

shaping seems to be pretty heavy. im ok with shaping but i have a 4meg line and my average speed is about 0.7mb/s - after hours it sometimes goes above 1mb/s at this rate it seems i'd get way better value for money if i signed up for the 512 uncapped..
i noticed in general my torrents upload faster than they download..

Thats my problem with the 4MB uncapped as well. They're shaping it WAY to much during 'office hours' - which looked like up to 8pm last night.

it just seems kinda pointless having a 4meg if i cant get close to 4meg speeds on anything during the day when im most likely to use the internet. i would be fine with me if torrents were shaped to death during the day so browsing at http run nicely during the day.. i can save my downloading for the night time.

They have a word for this sort of thing :

OVERSUBSCRIPTION

At the end of the day ISP's are taking all of us for a ride, but it's at least a better ride than a few months before..... :D

Within 3 months people will download less, which will see the tubes becoming less clogged. I'm still hoping telkom comes to the party and drops the ipc pricing so isp's can afford bigger pipes.

What are the 384 lines been shaped to during the day and how is the speeds during off - peak times?

Who would be the right person to direct a question related to line speed/latency?
This morning my Afrihost connection consistently reported above 3.4mbps and when I shot home to check about 20 mins ago, heavy fluctuations on both latency and speed. My telkom account always seems to offer higher speed during these periods... Im almost dreading tonight again as yesterday the same thing happened, then when 'afterhours full speed' time came, I was getting on avg 0.6 - 0.8 mbps :(

same here PhreeMe. despite my previous complaints though I am still happy with this product.. im still going to be able download more than ever before even with the shaping. im sure that after a while people will realise they dont need to be downloading the whole internet as fast as they can.. i had uncapped for only one month before i couldnt think of anything else to download.

as far as i know, only the 4meg accounts are available at the moment since they first want to test and all..

Yeah Mowgs, only 4meg lines are in testing currently. They have said that the 384k and 512k offers should be available in the near future though....

I hear what you say Vash.... Im not unhappy with the product... I just wouldnt mind getting getting my 4megs line worth. Testing with straight downloads (Fileshack and some others) Ive been lucky to get 800mb from 2pm to 11pm. Thats not cool!! :(

I have had no problems this side, also only use Hotfile or Rapidshare, and these have been going at full speed. Must however say that I only use this when I get home, so only after hours.

But very happy with this Afrihost product!!!!

Has anyone an idea if Afrihost is better than MWEB and vs. or is it the same product?

Definitely not the same product. MWeb have built their own network where they use Seacom and SAT3 bandwidth, Afrihost is using a normal IS connection with higher contention ratios and stricter shaping than their capped products. I think MWeb should have the better network here especially once both services are fully subscribed. At the moment it's still up in the air though.

Also to confirm, Afrihost definitely lifting their shaping rules at exactly 5pm every day so far. Not a bad system, it sounds like MWeb actually takes longer to start giving full P2P speeds.

after 5pm again my afrihost seems to have become unshaped. torrents went from 30kb/s now to 350kb/s. Still very happy with the offering. Hope it stays this way.
