Downloading how? If you just click a download link in your browser you can't use that to judge the speed of your ISP. It will, however, give you a good indication of the strain on the remote server, in this case Firefox's. If you are using a multi-threaded download manager, then that's a different story.

If I go to Speedtest, and run a local server test, I get 3.4MB.

But - If I then select a server, say Washington - I get

Is that right?

I'm not gonna pay 900 odd a month for that sorta access

PS. Web and Torrents download are not breaking 6kb/s

We've pulled 9GB today on Afrihost... all of it flying. No issues at all.

Perhaps that's how Afrihost are going to play it, same as DC's doing. Instead of throttling and shaping the entire network they will shape and throttle a segment of the network this week and then next week a different segment... Bandwidth load shedding if you like...

Ok i am upset with this uncapped now :-/.
My ping to SAIX and IS gaming servers is over 150ms.
Change to an Afrihost capped account and it goes down to 30ms. :(
It was fine Tuesday evening.

And maybe the slow speeds to the US is why my torrents are crawling along 24/7.

Both accounts used are with Afrihost

Ping Test - Uncapped Account

Speed Test - Uncapped Account

Ping Test - Capped Account

Speed Test - Capped Account

Anyone care to explain what is going on here??

Nope, when i use my normal accounts i get 420KBps on a single threaded download. That is exactly the issue, No internet radio streaming, No youtube videos. No nice normal connection. only good for downloading :/

Monkey Im having the same problem. My speeds are so chronically erratic that its not worth downloading. I had a 5 minute period last night where everything flew. I downloaded the catalyst drivers (71mb) at Full speed. But right after that short little period, back to a crawl.

Tell me if Im wrong, but does it seem like KZN guys are having the majority of the problems? It really gripes me that others are sitting pretty actually getting their full speeds worth and Im lucky to pull 100's of MB in HOURS!!

It seems whoever is outside of jhb is picking up issues...My line keeps dropping and downloads / webpages / youtube keep buffering or timing out on my 4MB line. Torrent speeds vary from 5kb to 100kb.

Agreed, i think getting another ISP is cheaper than moving to JHB :p
I will give it a few weeks before i start ranting and raving. After all it is still technically a trial.

Yeh - I'll be switching between Mweb and Afrihost and decide at the end of April.

I run a 4mb line at home with Afrihosts R29/gig and get fantastic speedtest results. My 4mb at work on their uncapped is a different story. Not horrible, but certianly not great!

It must be due to the shaping for the uncapped account. And I suppose the contetnion ratio. But I can get in excess of 10gig in a 24hr period. So I'm not unhappy!

Edit: but if I speed test closer to me I get really good results...

Surely 10GIG per day(10x30 = 300GIG per month) isnt that bad considering its shaped???

EDIT : Thats on avg 155 Kb per second.....not bad at all

Well i have managed to get nearly 30Gb in the last 3 days, so i know its way better value for money than capped.
At least now i have everything i need for a few months :p

Well then they should offer the line as 2mb and divide the cost?

Agreed +1. Its tough keeping the 'trial' bit on mind when you're on the @ss end of it though.
I've mailed them and they kindly responded thanking me for keeping them in touch with what was happening. They mentioned they are in touch with IS on a constant basis trying to iron out all the bugs....

EDIT: I've managed probably about ~5gb in the last 3 days.... :(
