Afrihost Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

Um, no. I still have my normal capped account with Axxess, switched over this morning when it was REALLY slow, and guess what, wasn't slow anymore. So, hmm, can ONLY be AH! :(

I agree! I still have my 20 gig account with Afrihost and downloads on that account are excellent. Switch it back to the new uncapped account and get a max of around 20Kbps download speed this is on a 4Mg line.

For the outcry against WA a few months back, there are a helluva lot of forumites still with WA accounts.

I have a 30GB WA account lying dormant. I haven't canceled it yet. Just moving back to it.

It looks like I must be the only one having a wonderful experience on Afrihost 4mb uncapped.

I have been on uncapped since 24 March, already done 35 GB's this month and currently doing 450kB/s on Rapidshare - Life is good

I've officially given up on Afrihost now. Sent a few emails, pointed them to this thread and others to give themselves an opportunity to redeem themselves by explaining the truth of the situation. I've used 24gigs since signing up at the end of last month and I'm being throttled to a level in which my internet is both useless for P2P at any time of the day as well as simple browsing (as of this evening) - http://www.speedtest.net/result/776981598.png

Thanks, Gian. It's been real. I don't even plan on asking for a refund so take your account and shove it. I'm moving on.

Yea, i can't say i'm having any issues at this stage. No idea why others are getting such crazy poor speeds.

I mean this is my speed right now to Washington DC :

You are indeed one of the lucky ones.....just look at this speed also on a 4mb line:

It is now 7:00pm... this should be off peak now. BUT my speed is throttled to death. I sent out a ticket and complained and also emailed a few guys and they all said that the service is semi-shaped. semi-shaped --> shaped during the day for p2p and news services and other services... unshaped at night dependent on how busy the network is.... Now if im being shaped and throttled to death, this means that network is not able to handle the load. I think they should stop selling any more accounts until the network is upgraded or more bandwith is purchased.

tell me about it...
i was getting better speeds during the day than i am now...i was happy....

now i have crashed back to reality.

small comfort

now that i have a Netgear router, i have grade A quality...

never got that with the mega 105..

And that's a rubbish story anyway. I was experiencing this ridiculously slow connection since last night, and it was extremely bad even just after midnight, so shaped or not, they are throttling like crazy. Not exaggerating when I compare it to dial-up speeds, really not far off - sick!

Well, i might have been a little unreal...

Speeds on my other torrent are going at about 35kb... i can do with that

What still gets me is this: By needing an uncapped line you obviously require higher data usage than lighter users (who may only browse, watch the odd clip, etc). Afrihost provides this service and cites potential "abusers" as being the need for them to throttle, yet their throttling policy is WAY TOO aggressive and comes into play WAY TOO early for even medium usage users rendering their uncapped account almost useless (even for browsing now it seems, not just P2P). Essentially what Afrihost is saying is that this uncapped offering is only useful for light usage which kinda defeats the whole point of having an uncapped account to begin with.

The reason for this I believe is simple. To reduce the usage of bandwidth the policies kick in to prevent you from taking full advantage of your line speed and achieving your maximum theoretical download total in a month....which Afrihost has worked out is probably not profitable (enough?). Thus instead of charging you for a fixed cap an amount which is sufficiently profitable they instead claim to give you uncapped, but prevent you from using too much and ruining their profit margins. Simple and devious.

wow, just hit 20gb on my 384 account and now my speed has been throttled to about 9kb/s and news servers are no longer downloading any more than 1-2kb/s if I am lucky and more often than not just timing out on the astraweb servers. Out of curiosity, once they capped me I switched my main computer to my web africa account and have another computer downloading constantly in the background on this useless afrihost account to see how bad it will get since this account is now worthless. Apparently when you hit 20gb on 384 the service becomes completely useless. Please tell me how they can continue to call it uncapped when it becomes slower than dialup? I can get 60mb in an entire night downloading all night if I am very lucky.

utorrent is going at 7 kb/s and thats on a 4mb line.

this is f**** up!

total BS!

i'm not paying R500 for a dial up service!!

goodbye AH!

I'm on 384k and was pretty happy with download speeds till this morning. once i hit 17GB, torrents are barely even downloading like 0.Xkb/s :/ though browsing anything else like youtube and stuff are still fine. grrr throttled to the max :(

i was happy too this morning until afternoon...was hitting 150 kb/s then speeds plummeted..

i was on 38 GB...i expected lower speeds now that im over 30 gb but not this snail pace.

Yeah I've canceled my account as well today seeing as i'm getting real shoddy speeds - and that's not even on p2p.
