All set for TV transformation

Yikes, how many articles do we need on this? :O

Can't we have some more "bandwidth prices are going to decrease soon" articles... we don't have nearly enough of those! :p

or maybe some more "Firefox is awesome" articles... I always like those.

Wouldn't mind a few more "Vista Sucks" articles as well, while we are on the subject! :D

the article said:
For the switch-over to occur you and I will have to purchase new technology known as set-top boxes (STBs) to convert signals from analogue to digital.
wont the STB's convert the digital signal being broadcast to analogue which current TV's can understand?

Do you really have to rub it in? Just because RPM falls under the 5m who gets it less 70% doesn't we can actually afford another R700 on top of the new DSTV. :D

but why would you get the STB if you have DSTV? ;)

I don't have DSTV... my parents have DSTV and I get to watch SABC 1+2+3+... etv? :D

oh, then dont worry, i heard the SABC have plans to start broadcasting in HD 1080p :D

so now we will have to buy an STB on top of the TV license fee we pay?

I have DSTv, and frankly have no intention of buying an STB.

The only reason I pay a TV license to SABC is becuase my TV can receive the signal ... how will they justify the TV license if you don't have an STB?

All televisions that are capable of receiving a "terrestrial broadcast signal" are subject to the TV license fees in South Africa. It doesn't matter if you don't plan on watching SABC, if the TV has an aerial plug, you have to pay the license fees. The only exceptions are TVs that are "out of commission" (not working) or have physically had their aerial plugs removed (such as those in school and university libraries). I think this will only change after they switch off the analog signal.... if ever.

In England Tv's come standard with Freeview built into the tv..I refuse to pay R700 for utter garbage...I payed almost that much for DSTV decoder, at least it let's me watch LIVE sport whenever I want...(instead of "delayed" or even not at all ala Euro 2008 where some games just got skipped) ..

ANC can take their mass population brainwashing/propoganda machine and stick it...

I’m not trying to be argumentative, but I can’t say I agree with you either. For the record:
I DO want prices to come down, of course. I’m not blown away by Fire Fox and I quite like Vista. Actually I believe the choice of browser should depend on the environment in which it’s used. Firefox is faster but its true power is in its add-ons. I still start off novice users on IE.
I also prefer Vista to if it’s installed in a clean environment of up-to-date machines. Gamers might feel different. Also if you bought an old machine at a garage sale Vista is not for you. You have to design the machine with Vista in mind and you will probably need a higher spec than XP. I just find the machine nicer to work on.
My point is that I prefer read a forum where people have opinions they can substantiate. You can learn a lot from people who have different exposure. I personally don’t simply look for people who share the same opinion. It’s boring and pointless!

I have Vista ultimate and since uninstalled it.
It strained my excellently powerful core2duo pc doing nothing!
Add to that it incompatibility with many good pc apps,Vista can go to hell!
XP is the best!Vista has been donated to a school.
waiting on a better windows...

Upon the analog signal switch off, those TVs without a STB will not
be able to receive SABC channels. The current TV licence will no
longer be required as there will be no signal to receive. So yes,
you won't need a licence, except DSTV will probably still carry
SABC channels. In which case you'll still need a licence. It may
be possible to remove SABC from the DSTV bouquet but I don't
know if the SA government will respect that possibility.

Who gets the license fee? Is It divided between all broadcasters, Or does the ANC mouthpiece get it all?

i will not pay R700, just use your pc to hack the signal
