The next time that it does this, take a pic of the LiBMS screen. It's what the battery's BMS is reporting. You will probably see that it is the BMS that is reporting the SoC. Get the battery's supplier to sort it out, may need a firmware update, or a checkout for a bad cell.

This may surprise the Hubble Bashing Brigade, but yes, surprise surprise, it does actually happen to other battery manufacturers too :unsure:

The installer was out last week and they did a firmware upgrade whilst he was here.

The guys from Freedom Won remote desktop'ed into my installers laptop whilst he was connected to the battery and they did whatever checks they do and apparently all was fine.

That in addition to the firmware upgrade and I thought it would be ok, but clearly not.

It always seems to happen when the SOC is already relatively low. It will go from 30 to 15 but never from 70 to 55 or 50 to 35 if you know what I'm saying.

Report it again, definitely not normal behaviour. They need to fix it.
 
So those charge/discharge amp settings don't mean anything in the battery section?

The battery has a built in breaker that cuts at 100A so it'll never go above... the discharge and charge amps should be below 100. I'm happy to charge at 50A max and in my case with two 5.5kw inverters and two batteries, I allow discharge of just over 100A.
These batteries come with 50mm2 cable so it's fine for those 100A. Which inverter do you have?

When did you get it?
There's a chance you got one of those with this issue...

I had an older model for a year before getting my newer one and haven't experienced that on either, but there's a chance the older one is holding things up? Dunno. From what I gather it has to do with them using another hall effect current sensor on some batteries in their supply chain while there was a stock shortage of the original part.
 
I'd reduce that to the dongle itself. The dongle could be phoning home regardless without your knowledge.
It needs a connection to do that. Solarman is built to phone-home but you can use it local-only as well.

I know its IP address, so I could block it from accessing the internet at my router. I haven't done so yet, but I may at some point.

I don't mind some Chinese spook knowing when my geyser turns on too much.

It's the principle of it. Perhaps it's not a big deal but a Chinese spook has no business knowing when your geyser turns on. It's not great from an operational security point of view. There are some who value things like privacy and data sovereignty.

It's true that the chances of you (or me) being a target is quite small, but some would prefer to reduce the attack surface as much as possible.

I agree that it is potentially troublesome. I'm not going to hamstring my solar system about it yet though (if it was needed).

I reckon every smart device in our lives is probably problematic - be it a router, cellphone, TV or smart switch.

If you don't need it while away you could do that, yes.

True, but there are some like routers and cellphones which tend to get more frequent security patches. I'm getting the feeling that up-to-date security isn't the major priority of an inverter wifi dongle.

In principle a device like a RasPi or ESP connected directly with a wire will be the most secure, then any potential attacker would have to get into your network the old fashioned way first.

Still as you point out - there's a cost-benefit analysis. It provides a big benefit for you, and the risk is so low that it probably doesn't warrant the cost to plug the hole at this stage. I'm in the same boat for the time being. I would like faster read-outs of the load though so that I can manage load more easily.

That's not really the risk. It's more about getting an inside to your LAN. Ideally you want a VLAN for all IoT.


They weren't in it for the water temperature readings.
I've seen first hand how nation state actors scan an office LAN from the inside with just one piece of insecure equipment.
 
I have two of those. They must be connected with CAN cable to the inverter and a terminator on the battery and that screen should look like...

Yeah, I've got the custom ethernet cable that goes from the battery to the inverter. It's also got the little dud terminator thing in the other port.

The LI BMS screen on the inverter also shows that it's communicating with the battery BMS fine.

I have the Sunsynk 8kW inverter.

I find that the battery has a 100A breaker weird. If the specs of the battery show that it can be charged and discharged at 200A, why have a 100A built-in breaker? I just don't get that.

That cannot be true.

Datasheet says "Shunt Trip Circuit Breaker sized to suit max current", so a 100A breaker on a 200A battery would not make sense.

Brights Hardware selling Deye inverters & batteries, Hubble AM2's, Blue nova batteries and a hell of a variety of solar panels. Prices not great.
