All things Sunsynk (Deye, Inge, etc...)

Everything is essential, so the "UPS" is the actual entire house. I had to look that up as I was confused as to what UPS meant 😂 my little house picture on the app is always 0W and my UPS picture fluctuates with the entire house load etc.

Ok woke up this morning and the batteries were around 60%, it has been completely cloudy and raining the previous few days and it looks like the entire week is like this.. just my luck when I want to test things! 🤡

Right now at 7am it says 375W from the panels + 498W from the batteries / 0W from Eskom and the UPS = 780W. Batteries at 47%
 
Your CT is probably in the wrong direction.

Nevertheless if you have everything on the inverter there's no need to use zero export to CT as the CT isn't serving any purpose.
Just use zero export to load and you'll be OK.

In the future if you add non essentials have a look at correcting the direction of the CT
if everything is on the inverter technically a CT isn't needed (installer might not have put it in as well)

So you saying you using battery is now being used :) - now just keep an eye when it drops to the percentages you set it should swap over to grid - and the late afternoon one if the battery inst high enough it will use grid to charge the battery

there is a calculation look at your highest month usage (check bills) take the kwh reading/30 to get the highest daily KWh
/5.5( average SA sunshine hours)/0.9 (powerfactor something :) )x1000/ by the max wattage of the panels you want to buy and round that up and that is the minimum amount of panels of that wattage

so example highest month was 650KWh/30/5.5/0.9x1000/555 =7.8
so the minimum for a home like that is 8x555W panels

In my opinion, if you already have the inverter and ignoring costs and roof space, put the max of whatever the inverter MPPT can handle. Sure, it may be too much for most days but when you have an overcast or rainy day it still won't be enough.
 
Helping someone with their setup at multiple places.

I don't get solar installers. Literally have 20kWh batteries, and the settings are 80% SoC always with grid charged enabled for all slots. This is the setup at all their properties.

One of their properties has about 9kWp of panels installed according to the invoice but on the inverter , its set at 6kWp and it generates on average about 30kWh a day. Would this setting on the inverter mean it won't allow more than that to be generated? This place has a 3 phase, 12kVa Sunsynk inverter if that matters.

I told them they should reach out to the installer as I find it hard to believe 16 panels of 560w is only generating on average 30kWh a day (for the last week) even if all the panels are not north facing. Panels are on double storey roof with no trees or anything blocking the panels.

They have enough load to utilise solar and the battery doesn't get charged fully to 100 by solar.

That sounds like it was installed by one of the 'rent-a-system' companies, I have seen a few of them with high minimum SOC battery settings, presumably to protect their equipment.

probably set it like that so they dont have to manage the nitty grittys - honestly it can be a bit of story to train some one especially the shall we say less technical on to manage a system - and it probably time consuming on the installer to remote manage this - a bit of a disservice though

The installer was appointed by Voltex, who supplied the inverter. He did a neat wiring job but I soon discovered his lack of experience when he could not get the inverter to start. I read the instructions and he was using the incorrect start-up sequence. He also had no idea about programming values

He undertook to return, but after waiting 6 weeks, found he had suffered a stroke and was not mobile

After speaking to some helpful guys on the Power Forum and reading the book several times, I have it mostly sorted

There are 10 x 550 watt panels and 4 x 5kW SHOTO batteries. I had a Mecer 5kW inverter for 6 years which worked fine until it failed in November 2025, apparently unrepairable

From October to March, the house runs entirely on solar/batteries

Here are some pics of the display screen below

I have one main question: The BMS display shows the voltage and temperature of all 4 batteries. I'd like, either using the Sunsynk or an external device, to see each battery individually. Battery 1 has a CAN connection, the other 3 via RS485

2 - Is the charging rate high enough to get all the batteries to 100% SOC say by 15h00?

I had a similar story. The total battery power was set to 100AH. I changed it to 200AH

what you currently seeing is what BMS on battery one is getting communicating with the other batteries BMS (so an average temp probably)
you would probably need something like solar assistant to get communication like that with the batteries but then again it might still only get the average as well have to check this on the solar assistant website on how it can communicate with your battery brand

I had a similar story. The total battery power was set to 100AH. I changed it to 200AH

That much I don't know as I haven't seen the battery details, but I think it was a FreedomWon 20KVA battery. My concern is that on their main house, according to the invoice, they installed 16 x 560w panels = 8960. Yet the installer had configured the PV capacity as 6500. Therefore, is their PV capacity being hobbled by the 6500 setting to only deliver 6.5kWp of energy or does it not matter? I am happy to set it at 8960 but don't want to blow stuff up.

The we can check the other settings. Of course, trying to ensure that they PV plant is being maximised. Unsure if it was. System was installed in 2024 - and they have had these settings since then.

Edit: Their daily load is averaging 47kWh - Big house and lots of pumps etc.

Im a bit rusty with the shoto's but here is what I remember:

The battery dip switchs have 2 different values/pattern configs depending on if you are using CAN or RS485.
So just a slight correction for when you say: "Battery 1 has a CAN connection, the other 3 via RS485" ... They are still communicating via can because the dip switches are in CAN positions, even though the ports are labelled rs485.

So because you can only set CAN or rs485 at any one time, it means that if you have CAN running into your inverter, you cant use rs485 into something like solar assistant at the same time like some other batteries allow. Even solar assist provides that info on their cable for shoto:

What im not sure is if you run solar-assistant using "inverter values" if you will see each individual battery in the software.

Something that is possible to test is to change your dip switchs to RS485 settings and then change your inverter to use RS485 instead of CAN. I think you can use pylon protocol 12.
I was lazy to test this last time but if I get a chance ill maybe test it this weekend and see if it makes a difference to show individual batteries on the inverter itself

Don't exactly understand.. if eskom goes down, you should run on DC/battery power by default

one would think... but I get a complete trip, error comes up as :
ac_maincontactor_fault

I have to shut down everything, wait 5 minutes, then restart, then it comes on and works for around 45min, then same story

This should not happen - might be an installation issue or firmware - need to get installer to check
 
Anyone know WTF is going on... what is my peanut brain missing here :

So the current time is 6:54am

I have fiddled around with the timings to get the batteries how I want them, almost depleted in the morning and then charge through the day, full at night when I go to sleep as I run aircons and then start again.

  • Currently 6:54am fits into "time 2" = 4am - 8am on my sheet. Which clearly shows a battery level of 30%. Does that not mean it should NOT be using Eskom and it should use the batteries until they drop down to 30%, when they get to that level the system will charge them back up using either Eskom or solar panels.

But look at the flow graph, right now I am using Eskom and its charging my batteries... ummmm

Last night at 22:00 the batteries were at 95% = correct. But then it just stayed on Eskom and didn't swop over to using the batteries at night.

Any thoughts?

Do you have an earth neutral bond?
