It is so hard to find a balance between optimal battery usage, surviving load shedding and not having to tweak settings constantly based on weather patterns.
I have grid charge ticked everywhere but I slowly raise the battery level during the day. Normally the solar takes care of it but if the weather is kak and the battery is low the grid chargers it. Don’t want to reach 5pm on a bad day and have a low battery and load shedding during dinner time.
Today is one of those crappy days and I've changed to allow grid to charge and soc from 30% to 100%. I have loadshedding at 10 and solar is looking weak today.

The only setting to make your life easiest is grid charge all the time and 100%. You won't save money but you will protect yourself the most and not have to worry about changing anything going forward

Pouring here. Pulling 6Kw from grid to charge batteries back from 30% and supplying the house.
 
As you progress and get to now your system better (and add more panels), you will get less and less paranoia.
Even if i had 1000 panels today it'll do nothing. I need rain panels. :cool:
Paranoia is a bitt less after i told myself i'll be eskom dependent untill i have more batteries.
 
We have three phase installed at home.

Up until recently I was only considering installing a 5kW inverter on one of the phases. Just received a quote that included a 12kW Deye Inverter that comes pretty dam close in terms of cost to the other quotes I received for a 5kW inverter.

Should I opt for the larger inverter over three phase and give myself big scalability? My current electricity bill (residential property) is around R1700 a month.

Battery will be 5kW and looking at installing 8 panels as a start.

Depends on how you split the 3 phase into your house, although that could be changed. Remember the 3 phase inverter is limited to 6kW (if I remember correctly) per phase max, so still slightly better off than with a 5kW on one phase. But the 3 phase inverter is more than double the price of the 5kW so you could get the cheaper quote down a bit more if you want. You could later add another 5kW in parallel to have 10kW and it will still be cheaper.

I dont think one needs to go to that extreme but I get your point.
The best balance I have found so far is with grid charge ticked everywhere is:
00 to 06 - 50%
06 to 09 - 25%
09 to 11 - 40%
11 to 14 - 65%
14 to 17 - 85%
17 to 00 - 95%
I have to keep the battery at 50% during the night to survive a 4hr loadshed with no panel output.

For sunny days i would untick grid charge on all daytime hours and then depending on your battery size lower the min SOC for the battery to further utilise that stored energy

For a 4hour loadshed at night:
If the house is asleep, i need 50%
If the house is awake i need 90%

Assuming typical night time usage of approx 300-400w you should get 7-8hrs from that before hitting minimums - so if you make your min SOC 30% overnight, the battery should power you from about 9pm to about 3am - then you run off eskom until the sun re-energises - assuming you don't heat your geyser during this time. Having that second battery back will help a huge amount

The problem with your settings is that you have grid charge on everywhere. So from one block at 60% to the next at 100% it will immediately use grid to charge if there is not enough solar. Rather leave frid charge off on the first 100% block to let solar charge it up (but then you will use grid whenever there is not enough solar) and then at the second 100% block you should be at or close to 100% battery and not charge from grid.

Ideally your daytime slots should be less than 100% so you can use the batteries to top up when solar is not enough.

These are my settings for current loadshedding situation. Normally it will go down to 30%. But we also only get 2x 2hour slots a day so this might not be enough for you (with only 1 battery atm).

My thinking was lights and some plugs onto one phase. Geyser, AC and stove on other phases.

First question I'd ask is how much battery % do you need to get through a load shedding shift? Then set that as your minimum SoC at all times with grid charge ticked.

Do you need the three phase for anything? I didn't, so I just lumped it all back on to a single phase with a 8kw inverter. The other two phases are totally dormant now.
 
My standing load is around 700-800w. I will play around a bit and see whats working. Thanks everyone.

On a side note. Just check this crazy chart for today so far. Raining etc.
