Amazon Kindle for SA

How are people from Europe "reporting" anything when the Kindle isn't even available yet?!

Those are people that got the Kindle from the USA and downloaded the purchased book to their PC and then transferred it to the Kindle using a USB cable. Since the introduction of the international version they can apparently no longer purchase from the US store.

I currently use the Kindle app on my iPhone. To access the US Kindle store I use a VPN service on my Mac (also works on my PC) to access Amazon "via the States" (skipped the proxy route all together and went VPN instead). Have downloaded books that aren't available in the South African store this way :D
My Kindle should be arriving early next week though - can't wait!!! :D :D :D

K-Pax : whatever doesnt match :) So technically yes they still have control.

KillerX: Proxies dont always work. I tried once and at the very last stop got "Credit-card used not issued in United States of America" :)

Yes, card companies are feeding the greed by having country assignments in the card no. :)
Buy vouchers for yourself - Amazon then uses your voucher credit before trying your credit card - works for me :D

bwana : through conversion. further fineprint i've seen is that you u can only convert it through Amazon, at a fee of course.

You can convert for free - send your attachment to [email protected] - you won't be able to have it delivered wirelessly though but through USB. I really don't mind transferring through USB if the conversion is then free :D

I would have thought it works like Blackberry? theres an APN here that someone, or everyone is routing and so the Kindle just comes on and finds a network and says I'm from AT&T Can I roam? Yes, give me this APN please and it connects to a central server like Blackberry. Data bearer costs are just billed back to AT&T who has contracts in place much like a Blackberry user sufing the net is "covered" by their Blackberry subscription?

I am close to ordering, but now this thing of not all books being available worries me.

PS - and im not keen on e-readers for mobile phones. Apart from being uncomfortable to the eyes, has anyone tried lying in bed holding a cellphone in their hand for a few hours to read? its horrible uncomfortable and will eat through batteries like its free.
This sounds about right. There is most likely an AT&T "SIM" in the device and they have made agreements with their roaming partners for Kindle downloads :D

According to Amazon's site - if you are a South African user then you will be able to download books wirelessly for free. If you are a US user and you come to South Africa then you will be charged $1.99 to download a book from the store or your archive.
So, my Kindle arrives next week. I will be deregistering it from my "SA Amazon account" and then registering it to my "US Amazon account". Seems like I'll have to download new books via USB (to avoid the $1.99 download fee). If I'm not mistaken, I read somewhere on their site that they won't charge for Whispersync (even if you are "roaming" in another country).

Guys - the Nook likes much better than the Kindle. What do you think?
Do Kindle users regret buying it and not waiting for the Nook?

The nook looks interesting. At least it supports ePub.

Aside from that it remains unproven. Seems to be purely aimed at US only with B&N selling ebooks only to US customers. Their store currently uses the proprietary eReader format but it seems they will add ePub 'at some time'.

You can buy Ebooks from other sources, even Amazon and rip them (maybe it's not legitimate but under criminal law it's not illegal).

A Nook will be available by WantItAll, Have2Have, Ebay and numerous other websites too. To me it looks like a better hardware device - Wifi Wireless, expansion cards, nice colour touch display (although that can draw battery power too :( ).

I think the most prudent way is not to get tied down to Amazon's books. Use alternatives too.

That's why ePub support is important. It's an open format supported by more and more stores (except Amazon). I didn't know the Amazon format was cracked.

I must admit, the Nook does look pretty impressive. But I also agree that they will have to "prove" themselves first. Kindle is by far the best selling e-book reader so Amazon must be doing something right ;)

How do you rip from the Amazon Kindle format? Got a link or some info?

Ok, but look at it that way. They're by far the best marketed E-reader with the best selection of books to order directly from your Kindle.

Maybe Borders will also come out with an E-reader :).

You'll need a Kindle serial number:

But there are other stores to buy from too:

Thanx, found this link too: http://nyquil.org/archives/1128-Con...or-reading-Kindle-books-without-a-Kindle.html
Haven't tried it yet, will try it when my Kindle arrives next week :D
Will be good to know that I can still read my Amazon books on another device if I ever feel the need to change devices ;)

did anyone's kindle arrive? reviews people! reviews!! :)

my credit-card is burning a hole here...

what is it with WantItAll's price of the Kindle? I could almost buy 2 from Amazon for that price! :)
