Amazon Kindle for SA

My Kindle has arrived!!!!! Just need to drive to our other offices now to go collect it :D:D:D:D:D

So, my Kindle was not picking up a signal so I called Amazon in the States (Skype is awesome). They were VERY helpful.

If you can't get signal on your Kindle then do the following:
1) Click "Home"
2) Click "Menu"
3) Select "Settings"
4) At the settings screen type "311" on your keypad.
5) Click "ok" (will now take a minute or 2 to search for networks).
6) Select "Switch automatically"

Note: If this doesn't work, then play around with the networks (Try Vodacom 3G or Vodacom 2G).

Good luck guys :D

KINDLE ROCKS!!! :cool::cool::cool:

is it using Vodacom?

Peachy. Books in 60 sec will be books in 60 hours.

You CAN buy all books in SA

Hi Guys,

I have a kindle and you CAN buy all books in SA just change your "One Click" account info to a US address, this address is never used as they dont send you anything, you have a seperate billing address on your credit card.

Now here is the interesting part most new books are $12 in SA but $9.99 in US, buy if you download it via your kindle they charge you a 1.99 fee, but you can choose to "download via USB" and not pay this fee... works like a charm...

Cheers
Herb

Yeah but... then what's the point of having a kindle? Surely the big selling point is downloading books wirelessly, otherwise you could go with a Sony or Cool-er or any of the others.

Yes you CAN lol

You can still use the wireless, and pay $1.99 extra per book that you are paying anyway as the books are more expensive in SA... so in SA no free books cheapest book is $2 but if you register US adress you get a free book but will pay $1.99 for the download.

The benefit is you get ALL the books, and if you are not fussed with having to use the wireless then you can get free books you just have to use USB...

Whispersync still works, browser still works etc etc. Just need to use USB if you don't want to get charged for the book download...

picking mine up tonight UPS South Africa really sucks IMO. It's been in in Johannesburg since thursday last week and they only delivered today.

Wow, that sucks! I ordered mine Thur last week (was shipped lated Thur night out time) and it arrived Monday about lunch time. Was waaaaaay faster than I expected!!

I have a unique question now that u guys have one.

I give talks on a platform sometimes during the week and i need to know if;

1. The device is readable with a neon light above you.
2. the device does not glare easily if its at angle to you (i.e lying on podium)
3. Is it stable enough to replace printed notes?

hmmm i wanted to place my order now, but Amazon is pricing it at R2600 incl so called import fees. Thats a lot higher than I budgeted for, using the $259 exchange rates.

I see the USD/ZAR is 7.8 today, it was 7.4 a few days ago. I'm gonna hang around a bit and see if it doesnt improve by next week.

1. Hmmm... I have read in the kitchen with it under a fluorescent light, no neon yet though. Will have to find a neon light to test...
2. Have only seen glare if I hold it at a specific angle with direct light on it. Definitely the least glare I have seen on any screen before!!
3. Definitely!

Yip, was about $40 import duties and about $20 shipping (or somewhere around there).
I see the rand has climbed these last few days - pity in this case...

It is not available locally?

Nope, only available through Amazon in the States. There are other companies that import them but it seems to be more expensive getting it through them (Amazon in the States is your best bet).
