Amazon Kindle for SA

i saw a sony reader in the shop at fourways. not bad, but you could fit 2.5 kindle's in its thickness.

At the moment I read all my books, (all un-DRM'd) on my phone, using mobi, but the screen is very small.

Would really love to have an proper e-book reader but the cost is prohibitive :(

If your books are un-DRM'd, then they should work on the Kindle. Really, the process of importing the device is really simple!

I'm sure they will :D. I just have to get the money to buy one.

I wasn't aware of the fact that there are Sony e-book readers available in our stores already. Where can I go to look?

i saw one at the audio/video place at fourways crossing just a few shops away from Toys R Us. cant remember the name.

Unfortunately, it costs more than a Kindle+cover+shipping to SA.

Great, I'll have a look when I come back from holiday. Pity about the price though. I'd really love one.

Thanx for your help.

Well, I couldn't convince my fiancee to open her Kindle before Xmas. :(

So, all I can confirm at this point is that it comes in a unassuming brown box. :(

Ebook readers still suck because the display is small and low res. I would like a 1280 by 1024 at least - preferably more - and larger - have the screen size be at least A4 - not the device size - have enough flash (16GB minimum) and be able to understand HTML, PDF, DOC, WRI, TXT, RTF etc formats. I'm more interested in being able to read journal articles, text books, manuals and html pages full of text than standard sized novels. Presently I use a 1280 by 768 10.1 inch netbook with 64GB SSD to do this but that's not always good on the eyes and the battery life does not last too long as the backlight eats it up. E-Ink is better for the eyes and batteries.

Hmmm... seems like Amazon just gave me an early Christmas present - just got a mail from them:

"Greetings from Amazon.com.

We're writing to let you know we processed your refund of ZAR405.29 for your Order ###-#######-#######."

Reason being:

"Reason for refund: Export fee reduced"

:D:D:D

A smaller screen is better for speed reading, your eyes don't have to travel as far, in fact I reduced the length of lines on my kindle and indeed I am reading faster (I suggest you pick up a book called Triple your reading speed by Wade Cutler if that interest you). A larger screen is definitely not better and if you need to see pictures, etc then an ebook reader probably isn't for you.

That doesnt make sense. High resolution on an e-ink screen is pointless since it already has equal resolution to a book/novel. Its not meant to be a replacement for a notebook, its mean to be a small, easy-to-carry device for reading the printed page - not the electronic page.

and A4 would simply make it impractical, which is why you dont find novels or most other books printed in A4.

That's cool, did you have to ask for a refund, or was it automatic? And how long after your Kindle arrived?

I'm just intrigued.. how much are you guys paying for your Kindle's? (roughly)....

I'm very very very tempted to order one..

Mine was (roughly ;)) R2,442

I have never been happier with something I've bought before. I have ZERO buyer's remorse.

bought directly from Amazon then?

*damn damn damn... getting WAY too tempting*

Yup, shipped directly to my work address via DHL. No hassles with import duties etc. Ordered on Friday, was reading on the following Thursday (should have arrived on Wednesday, but DHL messed up when it landed in SA).

One of my colleagues had better luck with his, and it flew direct to SA. Mine went via Germany, then London.

R2,400 was the sweet spot for me. I had been tempted previously, but when it hit this price, I decided to go for it.

Was actually automatic, didn't request anything on my side :)
Got the mail just under 2 months after placing my order. Got my SMS from FNB last night saying the money was deposited into my account :D
Will be interesting to see if anyone else gets their import duties back...

I finished my first book on my Kindle-for-PC last week. One thing I realised from reading this thread is that the Kindle wouldn't suit me because I read in the dark.
