Amazon Kindle for SA

Well I would also be asking the question of how you saw the Clive Cussler book if you were browsing the South Africa Kindle store.. since if they can't sell it to you they won't list it as far as my understand goes.

If (like me) you really HAVE to use the US store - make sure you use a US VPN when accessing your Amazon account - ALL THE TIME. I repeat, use a US VPN service when accessing your Amazon account!!
Secondly, make sure you fund your US Amazon account with gift vouchers. Do not run charges on your SA card.
I tend to use the wireless on my Kindle to a minimum as well. Have had my Kindle since the international launch and no problems yet :)
Remember, 1) VPN!!!!! and 2) gift vouchers...

For VPN services check out www.strongvpn.com or www.monkeyvpn.com

I use the UK store, and deliveries take only 7 days max!

cableguy : we're talking about the amazon Kindle store here... instant delivery since its electronic and has geolocation enabled as well it seems.

The "South African Kindle store" takes you back to the mothership at amazon.com, unless you're referring to a site other than amazonsouthafrica.co.za

Just for the record though, it's not just Seffrika that has the problem with ebooks not being available for purchase - it's the world outside the US from what I've been able to gather from kindleboards.com

Well, he wouldn't have seen it, so that is why he had to change over to a US address in order to try and circumvent the geographic restrictions on the sale of the title.

By the way, which book by Cussler is it that you are trying so desperately to buy? I see the Africa store has almost EDIT 15 (not 30) of his titles available?

BloemGuy, the Cussler books on offer to us in SA are all old (read them years ago). The newer ones are not available. I bought "Medusa" when I still could do so using the US address. The Silent Sea is the latest one. Would like to be able to buy his latest books as they come out (and not just his but books by other writers also). Maar nou ja!

Rapidblue, thanks for that info ... (1) VPN, (2) Gift Cards. Wish I knew this earlier. Wouldn't Amazon pick up when you send your purchase to your device in SA - and you read it in SA - after buying it as a "US based customer"?

With MonkeyVPN one can hide one's IP for 24h @ $1.49. This can work. If only I knew this earlier ... :D

Hmm, I checked and at all the shops that I use I couldn't find those titles available for sale to SA, so not just a Amazon thing, but rather the publisher. Also, the titles were quite expensive ... up to $30 at some. Time to start reading all the thousands of free classics! :)

With a Kindle and a "valid US address" one can get those titles for $10. Medusa is available at Exclusive Books here in Canal Walk for R220 (hardcover).

Well, take into account that Amazon is heavily subsidising some titles (as this one seems to be) because they are selling it for $28 at mobipocket.com (an Amazon.com company).

It may well be the case. All the more reason to get a "valid US address" or IP cloaking solution ... :)

I probably have a red dot on my forehead now (Amazon "gun" pointed at my head) ... so no more smart stuff like VPN's and gift cards for me I guess ... :(

Nope, just download it to your computer (using a VPN obviously) then transfer via USB to your Kindle :)

BTW . . . I have seen them pickup that you are not in the use with kindle for pc very quickly...

Yip, I also have Kindle for Mac and Kindle for iPhone, but if you don't use a VPN with them either then you looking for trouble...

I got my kindle a couple of days ago.
It's not a big issue, but it always connects via Edge, and never 3g. Even in areas where my cell, USB modem etc all show 3g.
I know on the old one (kindle 2) there was the "311" fix for this - how do you do it on the new Kindle (3)

You hold down shift (or it could be alt) and then then E (for 3) and Q Q (for 1 1)...

What's the first 4 digits of your serial number?? B006 or B00A??
