Amobia

Amobia will install the CPE which will leave you with a single ethernet connection to it. You can then either connect this to a single PC or a router - the Linksys WRT54 I have was used specifically for that and it does have a rather nice range too. It is however just a standard wireless router - not a hotspot with account management. Perhaps if you load some freeware firmware on it like DD-WRT or something similar it can do a hotspot for you.

I wish they covered the suburb in which I reside, but I guess farm-like areas are not particularly profitable. Anyone know how shaped their uncapped is?

Their uncapped is basically M-Web ADSL uncapped. So it is shaped during the day but no too badly. M-Web does have one of the better shaping policies in place compared to other providers. I used a 2mbps uncapped connection to Amobia and I hardly ever noticed any form of shaping.

That's awesome. I'm currently on MWEB 4Mbps uncapped and it's truly a pleasant experience. Unfortunately I'm moving to a "farm-like" next week, so bye-bye ADSL.

My best option is going to be SAWireless' uncapped symmetric 1Mbps account for R1198. I'm not sure of the shaping on that, but I think it's unshaped. And no nasty FUPs to deal with.

[-]What, if any, FUP does Amobia have? [/-] Oh wait, you already answered that!

Ohh, I see. In that case, they can roll their offer out of here. Woulda been much better if it was a monthly rolling average of 100GB, as opposed to being 10GB per 3 days. Just the WoW client download + patches alone is close to 10 GB. One's internet data usage is not steady, some days you download a lot more than others. If they have to have a rolling average, then 3 days is much too short.

Hey Rouxenator, are you sure about this rolling window thing?
I talked over the phone with a rep from amobia and when I asked him about this rolling window policy he didn't know what I was talking about.
Trying to make a quick sale perhaps?

If you are an Amobia customer you always get a daily report email with your usage. Its the same thing you see when you log in to their user portal. For capped user it shous you how much you have used so far and for uncapped users it gives you your total userage for the month and your rolling average over the last three days. This is their rolling averages :
3MBit/s - 10GB/3 day
2MBit/s - 7GB/3 day
1MBot/s - 4GB/3 day
384Kbit/s - 2GB/3 day

You are welcome to exceed those with no implication on your connection but in my case I got an email after two weeks saying that I have done 50gb and I need to back it off a little else I might get 200gb for the month (clearly too much according to them). Thats when I activated my ADSL and since then I have been doing about 333GB per month.

I dol think Amobia has a fair offering for user that want better value for money than on capped - as long as you are not a heavy downloader that plans to top 100GB per month.

Am I allowed to do the install myself?

Wug stuff would probably not work on it eitherway, it would have been cool if I could have used all the same equipment to run the wug and amobia.

Rouxenator: we currently don't have coverage, but when we get I will look you up to see if it is still available.

Chat with Amobia, I think you will be able to connect using your wug kit if you have a rb with more than one mini pci slot. You will just need another radio, pigtail, lmr and grid.

They run their own version of BusyBox on the CPE. It handles the authentication to the network and even if you relocate from one tower to another you need them to come out and reconfigure your CPE (costs R1000 each time). When I sold my CPE a few month ago I bascially had to give it away because the relocation costs is half the price of a new install.

So in short - no you can't connect to their network on your own.

I see... Thank you for the clarification.
I am past my heavy downloading days so I would be happy if they allowed me to do around 100GB pm on a 1MB connection.
Anyway, will have to think again about this since the only options in my area are WiMax and Amobia. No phone lines in my complex so no ADSL...

What about online games? I'm not a heavy downloader myself, that is why I have internet at work ;), but latencies are a big issue for me.

I never had problems with latencies on their capped accounts and I am sure their uncapped is the same, keeping in mind I never used latency sensitive apps in the two weeks that I had uncapped.

Can we please see pingtest? To UK and JHB?

When I first got onto my uncapped Amobia account

(upload was dodgy cause I clicked on Botswana)

Afterwards when I downgraded it to 384kbps capped

(got this constantly - not bad for a 384 connection)

Ah, ok, thanks. :)

BTW, how did it come to 640 on 384?

Their speed limits are basically software throttles. Sometimes it allows you you get much more than you should. The physical wireless link was good for about 40mbps I'd say.
