ANC - Western Cape independence!

Sackboy : its a fairly safe assumption that more than 50% of the population of the WC do not have a matric.. its probably a much higher number than that actually.
Would the undereducated immigrant lot meet our stringent residency requirements? I doubt it. We will have to put them on the train back to E.Cape and revoke their visas.;)

And then you'll have no unskilled labour to make everything work... and the country will collapse in short order.

To an extent true however a skilled work force is better than an unskilled workforce, there would be no excuse for unemployment, crime would decrease, and there are many uses for convicted criminals, like building infrastructure etc in chain gangs (which I should stress the Cape Party has not said at any time it's entirely my idea :D). That or instead of national service you get a compulsory community service at 18 for all, and only on successful completion would you be eligible to vote in any subsequent elections, earning your right to vote. (Again something an idea I subscribe to and in no way endorsed by the Cape Party) Some what controversial I know :D

Yep, without the E.Cape riff-raff and the K-dars from Norf, we would be able to save money and pay the more skilled workers more. Did I mention a tourist tax for people from Joburg.:p

You always need an unskilled labour force...

Skilled labour will not do certain jobs, that you can't give to criminal chain gangs.

Firstly the immigration rules will only apply to people who does not live and work in the WC (standard practice for any country), secondly the WC can always issue work permits if and when they need additional labour(standard practice for any country).

I think you're being short sighted if you don't think there would at least be some type of aggression.

The risks are huge. Much misery (on both sides) will be caused. Much ‘face’ [by the SA government] stands to be lost. Politicians fondly believe they can control violence. They can’t. They can often trigger it, but once it begins, it gains a life of its own. You can’t turn it on and off like a tap. It is much more deadly than scaled-up intimidatory thuggishness.

And whats to say the International community WOULD back the WC's call for independence since it has no basis in history really....

A reliable investment haven. A working ‘law of contract’. Etc.

Investment in what? Tourism? Textile industry? What exactly?

As for working law of contract, we have that already, look at the Vodacom listing drama for example.

Why will much face be lost by the SA government?

Politicians don't control violence.. they attempt to control populations and it usually fails.

This is directly to the Cape Party : You really need to up the "education" of your supporters.. so far none of them have a WORKABLE idea of how this independence will happen, and how the new "country" will survive afterwards...

Investment in anything the WC (or the investors) want to invest in. It’s reliable, and things happen (responses, etc.). There’s no danger of investments been nationalised, stolen or BEE’d or AA’d into oblivion.

We have a working law of contract in the same way as we have a working democracy (a mixture of feudalism, ancestor worship, etc.). The law of contract has been similarly ‘Africanised’.

Face will be lost when national braggarts get their butts kicked.

You use the threat of violence (and intimidation) to control populations. The threat has to be credible. With the current government it’s all talk. What I’ve seen of the ‘New Improved SANDF’ hasn’t impressed me one bit.

South Africa has a working law of contract, just like it has a working democracy. Its not a mixture of anything, its a proportional democracy.

You're honestly talking twaddle about Investment in the WC being reliable etc etc... how do you know these things, since investment in the WC is currently investment in SA and has the same risks/benefits and laws applied to it as to anywhere else in SA.

Which national braggarts are going to get their butts kicked?

What threat of violence/intimidation is the SA Government using to control populations atm (and don't use Malema et al as examples as they're NOT politicians, and their threats don't control anything). The current government is not all talk, they're mostly talk atm, but then they've only had 2 months to try sort things out. What have you seen of the new SANDF? and why should it impress you, its still a bigger and better army than the one the WC would have should it gain independence.

This is becoming silly. You offer no reasoning in your posts, and instead opt to point to things that dont exist. Like the law of contracts being "africanised", whatever that means.

sox63: Do you honestly not agree that an Independent Cape would be favorable for investment?

Other than the two sectors I mentioned, I personaly dont see much that would bring in FDI. And tourism is the only one that would have prospects of growth. Textiles have an uphill battle.

So I ask again, what would make the Cape suddenly so appealing for people to invest in?

A stable economic environment. If the Cape got its Independence, many expats would return, there would be in my opinion alot of money coming home. Trade with SA will continue as normal, I dont see why companies would have to choose "one or the other."

Western Cape can do this because we have a harbour - can you imagine Gauteng or the Freestate (pun intended) trying a move like this ?

There is already a stable economic enviroment.

And these expats that would come back, where would they be employed? I doubt the WC can absorb ALL those people, just not realistic for the size of the population, IMO.

What does a harbour have to do with anything?...

Cape Town as a harbour would lose a LARGE volume of its Transshipments if it seceded from the Republic of South Africa, since as a country South Africa already has a bulk terminal that is better than Cape Town Harbour, and a Container Terminal that is better than Cape Towns... So that would be one thing that would seriously hurt the economy of the Cape.
