Just not realistic for the size of the population??? Are you serious?? The WC is larger than England. We have 4.5 million ppl, vs Englands 62 million. "The total land area is 129,370 km², about 10.6% of the country’s total. It is roughly the size of England or the US state of Louisiana."

(Just BTW, not that theyre habitable, but the subantarctic dependency of the Prince Edward Islands is included within the province's administration...)

the WC does NOT have the economy of the UK. The UK has a 1st world economy that can handle having 30+million people employed, the WC wouldn't be able to cope with 6 million...

And don't tell me the WC can build an economy like the UK, because it can't, its physical location will ALWAYS prevent it.
 
We dont need to build an economy like the UK, for starters we dont have as many ppl as they do. Look at new Zealand, their doing pretty well for themselves and are pretty isolated location wise.
 
As Toxic has already said, its not about how many people can FIT in the WC, its about how many can make a living there. :p
 
Ok New Zealand has a population of approximately 4.3m people, which is comparable to the WC, but is double the size of the WC in terms of land area.

As for the economy, New Zealand has a few things that work for it in terms of its position in relation to the Asian Tigers... Which the WC doesn't have in the slightest.

Now it is? It isnt dude, and its positioning at the tip of Africa is not as isolated in today's world as you think, in fact its quite favorable when it comes to shipping. Does SA trade with China? Yes. How far are they from eachother? Far. Does it matter? No.
 
Also, how much of New Zealands South Island is mountanous and uninhabitable... Although I guess the same can be said of the Klein Karoo...

BTW, Toxic, from Auckland NZ to its closest Asian Tiger, Singapore, is the same distance as from here to Europe.
 
In my area of the Western Cape I see on a dialy basis the things that gives the Western Cape its biggist econimic strength - tourism and wine. Since the WC is the first place where people from outside Africa set foot it has the most hisorical places and and wine farms. The only other national place I think tourists are interested in on a big scale is the Kruger Park.
 
Ok size is not an issue, but since you felt the need to bring New Zealand into this, I thought I'd mention that little fact.

As for distance, it does matter, NZ are easier to reach from the Asian Tigers, mostly thanks to Australia yes... but they are easier to reach. The tip of Africa is notoriously out of the way for any economy OTHER than a transshipment colony, which will never grow very big in my opinion.

BBSA : Yes Namibia are managing, but I'd hardly say they're doing anything stellar economically, and unlike the WC, they didn't lose that much when they gained independence since they were a "remote" province of SA for all intents and purposes. The WC economy will get a massive knock if it becomes a sovereign nation because alot of the business that goes through the Western Cape for export will just be sent through Durban/PE/EL/Richards Bay instead.

You really believe businesses will overnight make things more difficult for themselves by moving to Durban? If it was or is easier for them to do so, they'd already be there.

Yes, and its easier for us to reach Europe than it is for NZ to do. Whats ur point.

Prey tell WHY a company will now have to deal with EXTRA export controls to get something shipped out of the country since that is what will happen if the WC becomes an independent country. There will be paper work for goods crossing the border between SA and "The Cape"...

On an economic point, why would the Europeans want to be here with their companies?.. They deal with Europe and North America, and Asia.....

Dude, your too pessimisstic about the Cape's ability to stand on its own feet as well as grow economically. Joburg isnt the centre of the world, not for us anyway. Having said that, theres no reason why the Cape and SA could continue trading as normal.
 
I couldn't give a stuff about Joburg, that place is a hole that should be vaporised.

But you guys have this rosy vision about what will happen and I'm just presenting you with points of view which are much more likely...

Cape and SA could continue trading as normal?.. they don't "trade" at the moment... The Western Cape is a part of the Republic.

You need then include our primary economic drivers which are tourism and wine as I posted on the previous page.

I cannot think of another tourist attraction apart from the Kruger National Park that we miss out on.
 
And you want to build an entire countries economy on what are "luxuries" at best... thats a very risky proposition at the best of times.
 
Many of South Africa’s major insurance companies and banks are based in the Western Cape. Most of the country’s petroleum companies and the largest segment of the printing and publishing industry are found in Cape Town.

Let's look at education:
