Yea with a standard bluetooth connection the volume is linked, when plugged in and using Carplay, they're distinct.

German carmaker BMW has confirmed it will be offering Android Auto connectivity in its vehicles from July 2020.
As it stands, BMW only offers Apple CarPlay connectivity for its vehicles and worse, it charges customers for the privilege. In a country such as South Africa where Apple sits behind Samsung and Huawei in terms of ownership reach, the lack of Android Auto connectivity is a dour point. At the launch of the new BMW 1 Series in Munich in 2019, we had a chance to chat to some of the tech engineers who mentioned that Android Auto would come at some point.
Now, it's official and BMW confirms that not only will Android Auto be made available for its products, but Apple Carplay will be free. Impressively, Android Auto connectivity will be wireless and there'll be no need to plug the phone in.

In a new study from IAM RoadSmart, a UK driving safety charity, it’s being claimed that driving while sloshed is, by at least some measures, “safer” than driving while using a touchscreen Apple CarPlay or Android Auto system.
IAM Roadsmart had drivers run through a simulated test course with following distance, stop-and-go highway traffic, and a figure-eight driving loop as the driving tasks, using this incredibly rad sim rig setup.

Apple CarPlay isn’t as widely available as it probably should be by now, but that problem is slowly getting fixed. Porsche is doing its part to help out, at least for vintage models anyway.
On Thursday, April 23, Porsche debuted (via TechCrunch) brand new Apple CarPlay-equipped radios designed for its older models — going as far back as supporting models from the 1960s, in fact. The potential downside here is that the new radios are only available in Europe right now. As far as options go, there is a 1 DIN size that’s a perfect fit for the Porsche models outfitted with a narrow-format radio standard (like the Porsche 911), and a 2 DIN size that fits the more recent 986 and 996 models. The latter option will fit larger radio sizes.
As far as pricing is concerned, customers are looking at forking over 1350 euros for the 1 DIN variant, and 1520 euros for the 2 DIN option.

It’s actually a very clever move because one of the biggest deals that would hold me back from owning and regularly driving a classic or even slightly older car now are these creature comforts.
If I owned a couple of Porsches it would be quite hard to choose the one without the simple things that “just work” when leaving in the morning.

Getting real tired of Google's BS. Back before the lockdown, whatever software version they had going on was working near perfect. Fast forward to today and a couple of version "updates" and the system keeps freezing amd needing to ve unplugged. Totally useless now. Can't use it for maps nor music. Have to resort to BT to get any music out of my phone.

BMW will begin rolling out its biggest connected car software update yet next month, bringing a range of new services and features to some of the most popular models in its line-up.
The free update will bring cloud-based navigation to BMW Maps, enable the recently-announced Digital Key technology for Apple iPhones, and redesign the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, as well as introduce wireless Android Auto for the first time.
A new eDrive Zone function will also allow plug-in hybrid models to automatically switch into electric driving mode when entering designated 'green zones', with over 80 cities worldwide supported at launch.
Every car launched with the company's Operating System 7 software will be eligible for the update, including the latest 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and X5. It will now come pre-installed on those models as they leave the factory, while existing customers can expect to receive an over-the-air update in the coming months.

Google Maps has finally been updated to work with Apple’s CarPlay dashboard mode, which allows users to display their current mapping directions side by side with music controls.
The dashboard mode was first introduced with iOS 13 last year, but it was limited to only work with Apple Maps at the time. Apple eventually released iOS 13.4 earlier this year, which introduced the option for third-party companies to add support for the dashboard mode on their own mapping apps, but it’s taken until now for Google to actually implement the support.
Google’s support works identically to Apple’s — starting today, you’ll be able to launch Google Maps in CarPlay with the same split-screen interface, showing turn-by-turn directions on one side of the screen and media controls, calendar appointments, and other useful features on the other.

Here's a question I am currently trying to solve: will android auto/carplay be supported in a year or two or 3 or 4 when the head unit you buy for it today gets left behind after being discontinued? (After all the apple/android/head unit updates etc)
Like in my current situation- Pioneer avh-x2850bt: got it 3 years ago and was awesome with Appradio with its headunit management of radio, music from phone usb, waze, spotify, navmii, etc.
As time went by, (I assume- more and more legal wranglings between the apps and pioneer) the apps compatible dropped off one by one and now I have no apps for navigation that are compatible. No updates from pioneer to allow for an alternative solution so I drive around juggling my phone for navigation with a big screen right next to me no longer allowed to show me the navigation on it.
Sorry for the essay, but I need to replace a dead head unit in another car now. And I don't wanna burn money on a pricier head unit that can do android auto or apple carplay now, but next year or two years later they have moved on and it's no longer supported.
Extra question- if they are going to discontinue Android Auto (as I vaguely read) in favour of Google Assistant's Driving Mode- will we still retain functionality of android auto? Or sit with expensive FM radios in a year or two?

So in other words- will head units that can support the functions of android auto at present be able to support the Google Assistant's Driving Mode as it becomes the mainstay? Or will we see a list appear online somewhere of head units that are no longer compatible?

Well, I've not heard that Android Auto will be discontinued or replaced by assistant driving mode, I might have missed those articles. I do know lately they've been fixing a few bugs after having neglected AA for some time, which I think bodes well.
Having said that, my head unit is a Kenwood DDX9016SM, which is a 2016 model, and it's still compatible with everything that was available the day I bought it.
