Android beats Apple, every time

well i have personally played with the Samsung Galaxy Tab and must say that it is really awesome but if it where slightly cheaper and have some really nice accessories like the ipad(read a flash drive with the camera connection kit after a jailbreak, and connect to vga, not hdmi!) i would go for it, i really wanted to get the Archos 101 since it can do all of that and more but the screen quality wasnt very good since it has these funny looking vertical lines on the screen(and they have had a few hardware problems and charging problems and they might not be able to upgrade to Android 3.0) i decided not to get it. i also played with the Ipad, the Archos 101, Archos 70 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab at the airport in Ireland and the Ipad takes first place since it is super responsive and a jailbreak is only a download away, the Gtab takes second places since it is much more responsive than the archos and it prove the most promising of all the android tablets, the Archos 70 forth since it seems to run better than on the 101, i originally wanted the archos 101 since i could read and write to flash drives, connect with hdmi and could tether using my nokia cell phone using bluetooth but they where al sold out and the quality compared to the Gtab and Ipad wasnt with the cash. so i have now made the decision to get the Ipad even though the Ipad2 is coming around the corner it will run so much better than the Gtab and Archos 101 + 70. i really am not much of a fanboy i originally didnt want the ipad and thought it was a waste but apple makes great products and they are so compatible with other apple products.

i definitely believe tablets will be the next big thing around the world and see a huge potential for android to succeed especially with the up coming android 3.0 and the motarola xoom. android is amazing and i would love to get one of the xoom's instead of an ipad but i need something now for university and time is of the essence.

I'm gonna reply, but I think your post should be moved to the cellular subforum. You'll probably get many more replies there. I'll leave it to the mods, though.

Many of the "big name" games seem like they're getting ported to multiple platforms. Popcap's games (i.e. Plants versus Zombies) for instance, are coming to Android. Apparently they plan to launch the first of their games on Android Market by next quarter, but I'm not sure if that'll inlude PvZ, though.

Rage (from id) and Dead Space are on iPhone and not Android. I've not heard anything about plans to port them either. One might argue that currently smartphone games are guaranteed to be released on iPhone, but not necessarily on Android.

I'm happy to be proved wrong in this, though. So if anyone with a better knowledge of the paid Market than I would be willing to list some "Android exclusives" that would be gnarly.

(Pre-publishing edit: Spectral Souls is $15, 1GB and currently only available on PSP and Android)

I'm focusing on the games because for the rest of your requirements either iPhone or Android will do, IMO.

The app stores

Game Dev Story is on Android, but it's a paid app and we don't have easy access to paid apps on the Android Market in SA.

On Apple devices (in case you didn't know) it's very easy to spoof your location in iTunes. The only trick from there is to find a quick and reliable source of iTunes vouchers which you can use to load credit on your iTunes account and then buy apps and music.

On Android you'll have to get root access on your device and download MarketEnabler.

Either of these methods is a bit of a hack, one just requires less technical skill than the other.

It's also worth noting that while you won't be able to get your hands on any games on iPhone unless you set your location to something like the US, you'll at least be able to get at the free games on Android without rooting it.

Hardware specs

One last thing that 's turned out to be quite important is the GPU on the device. Dungeon Defenders, for instance, *crawls* on my HTC Desire. It apparently needs one of the PowerVR GPUs that ship in Samsung's devices.

If graphically intensive games like that are important to you then your Android device choices are essentially limited to the Galaxy S and Nexus S. According to the Dungeon Defenders market page they also support the HTC Desire Z and Desire HD but they are classed as "mid-range" devices, whereas Samsung-built devices are classified as "high-range."

There were 70+ pads announced at CES 2011.

98% of them were Android.

An Android device is Linux OS + Dalvik (Java) GUI

This is combination of pad+Linux+Java is an enthusiasts / developers dream.
I think Android pads will be the device of choice and will make a serious dent in wintel and iPad.
 
Continuing with the car analogies.
Ford with make a car.
Apple will make a car that's shiny and has only one gear therefore no clutch and much easier to use for noobs. They will also make the brakes and the accelerator into a single pedal.
The Apple iCar 3G will have a brand new feature called a "hooter" and everyone will buy one to get the hooter feature.
The Apple iCar 3Gs will have a slightly bigger engine.
The Apple iCar 4 will have an extra 2 seats in the back and a brand new square design.


I haven't rooted my Android phone. If you can't access the android market there's a bunch of other markets you can get paid apps from. If you're into piracy there's enough places you can get full versions too. It's not like you're locked into the iTunes store unless you root/jailbreak. You can do what you want without rooting.


As for the pads that's a whole different story. Yes every manufacturer on earth is releasing an android pad now because apple did it. The android pads available now are running on android 1.5 - 2.2. It's an OS that was never even designed for pads but because it's pretty open etc you can run it on the pads so that's what they did. Android 3.0 would be the first "proper" version of android for pads and based on CES it looks frikkin awesome. You can't rate android on how the pads are just because manufacturers are using it in a rush to get something on the market.

Google has just released a new games API for Gingerbread and Honeycomb.

Expect a lot of games coming Android's way.

We all know that when you get an iPhone, you must first plug it into your computer (heaven forbid if you haven't got one!), then download and install iTunes & then register your phone with Apple.

Only then will your overpriced iPhone maybe.work.
 
The are definitely better things than apple but there is just something about apple which no other product has. Apple FTW!

Don't forget if you actually want to just download a FREE app from the itunes store you need to make an account with apple (in registration) and also put in all your credit card details etc... :(

A nokia 1100 just works too. Unfortunately it can't actually do anything.

Apple definitely won the mp3 player game but I suspect the pad game is going to be rather different. A bit more like the PC game. You will always get the apple fanboys with their pretty, overpriced toys for posing at larney coffee shops and you will get the people that want to actually *use* their device.

You're wasting your time, they'll just continue to say the same old (often blatantly untrue, as you pointed out) slogans instead of coming up with an actual reason why Apple stuff is so awesome. With any normal phone, you put your SIM card in (and don't have to ****ing cut it up first, or get a special, pre-cut one) and you're good to go. Ironic isn't it.
 
When will this end? Am I the only one who thinks that it's about personal preference? I frankly don't care about stock prices, whether or not some CEO is sick or if someone likes to tweak their device. Seriously, try Android, try Apple, then make up your own mind if it does what you want it to do.
 
Is it not amazing how the OS'es have become so intuitive, that it does not matter no more........ ?? (cellphones really played a huge role here) We learnt to adapt, and the manufacturers and software developers figured out what we needed......

FTIW, I fully agree. Got my Desire HD in December. I have a couple of friends with iPhone 3 and they say they won't be upgrading to an iPhone 4, they're going to get an Android.

If we compare tech, features and market its obvious Android rules. I hate to admit it, but Apple prdoucts do have that silly status stigma attached to it....and we love to hate it :D

I have a Iphone a Ipad and a mac. Basically a complete apple nut, or so i thought, i recently was due for an upgrade on my phone and i wanted a Iphone 4 so bad i called up everywhere and no stock. So i had to make a choice, wait for the iphone to become available or change to another brand.
I took the plunge and got a droid. The HTC Desire HD. I can happily say that i am glad that i got the Desire and not the iphone.
I might even get a droid tablet instead of getting a Ipad 2.
Just shows you that the apple effect can wear off.
 
No time to read everything, but my thinking is as follows.

Android is a subset of Linux and inherits fundamental flaws in its design. It's an OS designed by a loose and diverse committee then hastily implemented on a wide variety of hardware from different manufactures. That's the problem in a nutshell. Nothing is going to fix that. It will always be a prototype.
