Android vs iOS vs BlackBerry: Gartner quarterly stats

This is so true - I know quite a few people who use their tablet (Android or iOS) for nothing more than Facebook, Twitter and a bit of Angry Birds. I haven't had a game on either of my devices in over 4 months; I use my devices for reading (books & RSS); research for articles and other bits of writing; writing of articles, etc; Travel related research (for upcoming trips) and a bit of Reddit on the side. My only Social Apps are Facebook and Path, both of which aren't used that often.

True but my words were poorly phrased (since corrected)

Its amazing how many acquire almost no apps

While I agree that no business is without questionable business practices, to simply rail against Apple because of their "suing machine" is also a bit short-sighted.

Samsung are guilty of very questionable business ethics too, but the West doesn't pay much attention to any stories that do happen to get past Samsung's wall of secrecy (built and maintained by close links to prominent politicians, and significant "control" of South Korean media). At the end of the day they are doing what they think is best in terms of protecting their business, but neither of them is more saintly than the other - if you're going to question and dislike only one, you have to be sure the other is somehow cleaner, which I don't think is the case here.

Samsung: Power, Corruption and Lies

Incredibly true this.

See here too...

Okay, so the fact that Apple claims to run the best app store with the most apps is just fluff stuff ... not really as important and valuable as claimed? If so many people do so little on their devices as claimed in posts above a competitor with a small apps store with Facebook, Twitter and a browser should be able to compete nicely. Or do the number of apps available actually matter?

Samsung: Power, Corruption and Lies

I agree with you on most points and as I mentioned, none of the other companies are angels. That said, I haven't seen any of the other tech companies go after restaurants or supermarkets. They rip each other off all the time - which is obviously not acceptable either- it's just that apple seems to take it one step further by going after the" little" guys who have absolutely nothing to do with tech. That's what irks me. I don't dislike apple products, as I mentioned. :)

Yes the Nexus 4 would be my only Android option I would consider (that I can see).
This would be made easier by the fact that I have no intention of renewing any contract. At the end of my current contract I will be moving to Pre-paid and acquiring a phone overseas (and the Nexus 4 is a very good price).

My decision is complicated by the fact that the family (wife and 2 young kids) uses iPhones, iPads (no thought of changing tablet yet), Apple TVs and iPods.
The ease of being CIO and tech lackey for a single ecosystem influences me.
I also like acquiring content online (video and music) and sending it to my TVs or hiFi

The flip side is my business is invested in Google for business which works fine on iOS but I presume would be better on Android. Having said that we have M/S desktops for the non techs so the choices are not dead easy.

As for the Who sues who
- Well the system is broken. The rules are a mess and US companies all play this game. Motorola (owned by Google) are going after M/S and Apple to name 2 (under wifi and 3G patents).
- Apple are the biggest tech company and the tall tree. Tall trees get the wind and the publicity. When Apple were the underdog they got the sympathy vote. We dont know the extent to which the others protect their brand because it gets less publicity. We do know that IBM, M/S have been vicious in courts and bullying partners when they were the tallest tress.

What seems to have happened is that IP laws changed by the US Congress many years back have had unintended blowback in the courts
- Companies have to defend their IP or lose them
- It leads to silly lawsuits and horse trading

I am hoping that Congress reel it in and clarify the laws.
The system makes lawyers rich and it is really a tax on tech companies.
However to expect the tall tree to put their gun down without the others trading off is not realistic.

I hear you and I understand where you're coming from and I can agree with what you're saying. I explained what I have a problem with in my last post - to Chris.
I'm not hating on apple - which a lot of people do here. I'm just explaining what I don't agree with - and what personally prevents me from going the apple route. :)
(Though I may not post in every thread, I do follow them, so I'm well aware of your vested interest in the apple line - products, family, etc. :D )

The results state two facts: (1) Most smartphones sold in the 3rdQ were made by Samsung (Sammy and Nokia beating the socks off the rest); (2) Most smartphones acquired in the 3rdQ run android (72% = huge share). Now we have people tying to explain these facts away with complicated arguments about why "a" is actually "b" and "1+1" is not "2" but "1.45". Face it people: Samsung and Android is huge, and Nokia is not dead. Looking at the numbers some of us (unfortunately not all) see how Apple (with much lower numbers but by far the highest profits) is eating peoples money for breakfast, lunch and supper ... and the victims are willing victims. Feed the machine ... feed the machine ... faster ... faster ...

"Oh, but it is about the "premiumness" of the iPhone." Really? The S3 and Note 2 not as premium; not offering the same? I would argue the latter offers more. "No, its about the feel and the steel". Oh, then why use that plastic cover that makes it feel like a cheap Chinese knock-off running iOS 6?

I've been there. I today KNOW (from my own experience) that Apple takes iPhone buyers to the cleaners without actually offering real value over and above what Samsung and Android can do. People fall for the brand and is willing to pay more for it. It is therefore not about who has he best offerings technically, but about what extremes some people will go to to own a particular logo'd product. There are suckers out there, but the facts of the studies show that most people are not suckers. The suckers are a minority with a loud voice on forums like these that - by the volume of their "voices" - make it look like Apple/iOS is a real threat to Google/Android. Google must be having a good laugh in the background.

No issue with you. You are not one of the one eyed Fandroids. I even agreed with some of your Apple criticisms weigh in with a few more.

There are only a few that get my goat. I shouldn't let it happen.
Robust debate is great and there is nothing wrong with a little bit of bias because we all are guilty of at least a little.
Its also great that the debate is informal and a little trollish (only a little). Banter is good.

But I do prefer that the banter aside that the debate to have some academic grounding where we can consider the merits and demerits of all arguments.

I learn stuff from he people that approach the debate this way.
I learn nothing from the "Mine is the best and yours is crap" school

Youa re from the former school

Dont run for cover mate (and then fight from cover)
You said 72% of people run Android.
They dont. You were wrong or careless. Concede that at least.

The S3 is unquestionably premium and yes it has a few things over the iPhone.
And vice versa.
For me to say that the S3 feels a little cheap is not insulting especially when I have conceded its good points.
Its a credible choice although I would prefer the Nexus 4 if I went Android (and I will consider this objectively next year).

You don't KNOW these things because if you did KNOW the mathematical certainty would be that all iPhone users are gullible fools.
We have already established you can make mathematical mistakes.
So it remains your opinion or your perspective

Debating with people that shout from a camp and cant consider the merits of another camp remains juvenile in my opinion

Can't you concede that it is possible for 3 smartphone users to make sound objective choices based on their own requirements and for one to choose Android, one iOS and one Windows Phone. And they ALL could be sound in their judgement.

No. Only Android as a choice makes sense. The other two will be duped if they go for anything else. I'm trying to save people here, not help them waste their money on cheap products designed to look and feel expensive.

Oh shucks, I got my maths wrong ... in serious trouble now. May not pass whatever test it is I'm supposed to pass on here. The "F" will not look good on my MyBroadband scorecard. If only I finished that sentence better ...

Deary me, you are an idiot.

You also get an F for any form of academic writing.
However if you were around in the 1930s Joseph Goebbels would have had a job for you in his Propaganda department.

Only Android... rest are duped?

What's wrong with wanting the 'feel of quality' ?
Whats wrong with paying a bit more if you get what you want and you have the money?
Whats wrong with wanting up to date software without rooting?
Whats wrong with wanting to be able to buy video and music content online? (ok I need to 'live' in Florida)
Whats wrong with wanting good apps that work across all my families devices?

Of course some of the above is possible and practical with Android and Android offers things that Apple doesn't

Btw the margins on the S3 are good (maybe as good as Apples)
Samsung doesnt disclose the detail but logic will deduce that Samsungs TV divisions and manufacturing divisions carry less margins than their Smartphones. Why doesnt Samsung disclose the detail?

These iOS vs Android vs Whatever threads are so loaded with emotion that it requires an idiot to disarm the situation somewhat. We have had these fights for soooo long on here and there will never ever be a winner. The site owners/admins/writers know by now that this subject will create good post activity that they throw the same meat at us every week ... and every week we jump in to get our share. It's fun. It's a game. We play along.

To an extent its fun but I would prefer more thoughtful debate and less rhetoric ranting.
We learn more if we listen to others rather than just banging the drum.

Reminds me of a game we played in University many years ago.
It was called "You Drink". The drinker nominated the next drinker who nominated the next drinker etc.
Same thing - Its fun at 1st but it is a little tiresome after a bit
