Android vs iOS vs BlackBerry: Gartner quarterly stats

To an extent its fun but I would prefer more thoughtful debate and less rhetoric ranting.
We learn more if we listen to others rather than just banging the drum.

The thing is we are not in a position to change any of the products and their OS's here no matter how many times we go around the block. The companies don't hear us and they don't care. We also cannot really change one-another's preferences here ... people will stick to their guns ... so we'll just be going around in circles. Few people are willing to try something different out after they dug themselves into brand trenches. I was an Apple-only fan (of note) that converted into an Android fan, but it took time, money and lots of patience to learn to do things differently. I still like Apple products and will still invest in them. But I am not an Apple-only fan anymore and do know/acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses.

Windows 8, after weeks of use has however convinced me not to go the Windows RT route. I was keen on doing so (curiosity) but the Modern UI doesn't work for me. My Windows 8 setup actually now mimics my Android tablet screen layout after I installed Fences. Works for me.

I am a Sony fan. I've always been keen to see a good Sony Android product ... but nothing has convinced me to date to take Sony serious. The phones and tablets are not in line (at the same level) with their other products. Hopefully this will now change. An Android device with the look and feel one would normally expect from Sony (with frequent firmware updates) will be a very attractive option for me.

BB 10 will be interesting. Make or break. BB doesn't appeal to many power users, it appeals to mostly those (including myself) who prefer to use their phone as a communication device before anything else. I honestly don't have time to fiddle on my phone like I used to. Add to that demographic the many people who want BIS type service and couldn't care less for the Android market and I think you have a fair sized market overall. Would be interesting to see if BB swings it back a little.

I'm happy with my BB and what it is used for.

The key term is WORLDWIDE.
Many of the tech blog sites are limited fanboi opinions of what happens in the USA (eg. World Series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series )

It may not sit well with many here but Android dominates the smartphone OS space by a substantial margin worldwide (especially outside the US where iPhones are truly a luxury). And it is not because smartphone users are stupid that so many end up with Android. It is because people want FREEDOM to do with THEIR devices what they want how they want. Side-load? No problem. Can I have your files/content? No problem. Attach to computer and it acts exactly like the USB and ext HDD people are already used to. No rules. No imposed/forced limitations. People aren't all geeks but they for sure aren't stupid.

Well, then Google is achieving its goals with Android ... get it into as many hands as possible ("even if the owner at present is an ignoramus he/she will grow into our system" ). That is a major achievement right there. Cheap or expensive handset doesn't matter ... it's Android, and it talks "google" ... and it works equally well from ignoramus to geek. A winner in my books.

Agree, they just don't have or want to spend the iPhone cash and they're not power hungry.

True to some extent. Some people hate the fact that it 'talks google' incessantly though. They're not used to extra data costs every month. I sold my G1 years ago and the guy who bought it didn't quit whinging about that. I nearly refunded him.
