as the title suggests, i am wanting to give the itrips another bash.
I bought one about 18 months ago, that just plugs into the ipod, and it was shocking...
lasted around 4 minutes before i gave up because of awful sound quality...

Anyone found one that actually works properly? I would think the ones that power off the cigarette lighter would be better, but dont wanna waste money on something that is gonna further frustrate me with rubbish quality

Yes, the early iTrip's had a problem with a buzzing sound that got transmitted, and picked up on your speakers. Then they brought out a newer iTrip ( about 5mm thicker) that included better RF filtering. I have both, the older one is never used because of it's bad sound, but the newer one is crystal clear audio, and get's used all the time. (these are the wireless ones, that take power from your iPod/touch/iPhone)

I found the quality somewhat tolerable, it's not audiophile but yeah, there's no real alternative if your car player doesn't have a stereo input. I guess the one I listened to was a newer one (I don't own one)

Have one for an old iPod mini, works perfectly.
You must remember to keep the volume aroung 70% else you get distortions
