Howzit fellow gooks...

I'm thinking of moving over to Telkom as my service provider because after being on various uncapped packages (Cybersmart, Afrihost, Mweb), I've realised that I actually dont need an uncapped package.

Telkom's Do Premium package would offer me the best bang for buck because basically I would be getting 50GB (20gb international and 30gb local) plus a 10mb line rental for R554. Line speed means more to me than data consumption and I dont think any other ISP can come close to that kind of value when one considers the speed and amount of data provided for that price. Essentially the data component would work out to R139 for 50GB if one subtracts the R415 for 10mb line rental.

I've been with Telkom ISP before and the overall quality has been cool but how is it now? Latency?

You have 20GB. Not 50GB. Don't let Telkom fool you, and don't fool yourself. I think Telkom might be the only ISP left still selling and differentiating between local and international bandwidth.

That said, R139 for 20GB works out to R6.95 per GB, which is a really good deal. You'll only see that per GB rate on bundles bigger than 50GB, or uncapped. I still wouldn't use TelkomInternet though. Have you tried checking your current usage, or trying to topup? A major PITA.

I'd stick with Afrihost capped, and pay a bit extra. It's worth it. They even have an Android and iOS app, which will allow you to topup from the app pretty soon. Their ClientZone is amazing. You can manage all aspects of your account, products and services, without needing to pick up the phone.

I haven't had to look at Telkom's ancient, ugly, user-unfriendly, buggy website and portals since the launch of Afrihost's R29 per GB specials at the end of 2009. There's no way I'll go back to TelkomInternet. Ever.

Remember you have to finish your international before you use your local. So if you plan to use more then 20GB you'll be stuck with only locally hosted content.

Are you sure you will get 10Mbps anyhow? Chances are you'll sit with 5.1-5.4 unless you stay in one of the very few selected areas for 10Mbps.

I have been with telkom for about a month now. The only issue I had was when their Auth servers went down and I had to use my backup account for a day.

But latency is great and I don't feel any throttling or shaping on my 2mbs uncapped account

My parents are on Telkom, and it's absolutely horrible. Speeds are never consistent and fluctuate a lot, latencies are terrible and the line drops frequently. Switching to another ISP account fixes all their issues.

Uh, what does the line dropping have to do with the ISP???

Could you expand on what the PITA is? Yes, unfortunately due to other 'urgent project of the month' issues, these apps haven't received much attention, but the tracker and topup work fine form me ...

We are working on improving our tools, but unfortunately we've been mandated to not build certain functionality in, as it is supposed to live on the telkom.co.za portal :-/

Very up and down, has improved somewhat since a few months ago (seems to have gone haywire when 8ta/TI uncapped came out), but my MWEB 1Mbit uncapped regularly outperforms it in terms of latency, fast loading of sites, etc.

I'm on Do3, 10Mbit + 20GB which is decent for the price, but I suggest an MWEB 1Mbit account as well at R199 pm. The nice thing is that the MWEB 1Mbit runs between 1 and 2Mbit most of the time.

TI is still trusted by many people. My friends who have TI all say the same thing - they have heard of Telkom but never heard of Afrihost, Cybersmart, Axxess or others. Most of them migrated away from ABSA internet and it was suggested to them that Telkom was the way to go.

During the past 3 months, Telkom's call centre has improved in as much you speak to a human being within a minute or less and by saying the right words slowly, you can get what you want.

I'd stick with MWEB on their capped packages. They prioritize gaming before anything else. Afrihost sucks compared (I've had both btw)
