I was always under the impression that customs is billed on the total cost (item+shipping).

Twice I have been charged no duty, but maybe I too am fortunate. This is the latest eBay order:

ORDER TOTAL
US $21.37
+ US $12.99
shipping

34.36 US Dollar equals
437.77 South African Rand

I should have been charged duty, yet I was not.

The same happened for a previous order:
ORDER TOTAL
US $27.99
+ US $12.75
shipping

I make a point of making sure I send the eBay purchase history as well as the PayPal invoice.

It is. It was stated as such on my Aramex's first delivery. Both charges are combined when taxes and duties are considered.

I have also read that somewhere on the SARS website quite a while back.

I just had a look at the Customs documentation on my first package and I can confirm that they add the shipping charges to the price of your product. You then pay tax on the combined amount. And, in addition, you then pay the import duties where applicable.

You pay government tax on everything. everything. Parcel, shipping, your first-born-child... Taxed. :(

SARS Duty is a bit more lenient:

I should mention I got the R73.40 FNB offer off that price. It was R294 (R195 + R99)

So true, one of these days they may even ask you to report your daily bandwidth usage when ordering online, convert the MBs to Rand and add that to the import taxes too....

I was amazed that they did not charge duty on 100 Euros, which is 1371.95 South African Rand according today's rates. Either you were very fortunate, or part of the 100 Euros was postage to your EU address, which does not incur duty.

Nope. The postage to my EU address was 32.70, which was over and above the 100 of the actual item.

And I'm pretty sure it wasn't a mistake, as I requested them to give me a customs quote on the item before I even made the purchase, where one Puleng sent me a result of "no customs". The total cost was integral to me to make the purchase (or not) if I could afford it.

Someone quoted wrong, and a quotation is legally binding. You got very lucky.

Okay, I have not yet heard from Aramex since requesting to cancel my account and refund my money. Also, they have not yet replied to the Paypal dispute against them for the courier fee I paid. At least, I know, after 20 or so days, if they do not reply, Paypal will automatically refund me the payment. I have just started a dispute for my lifetime membership fee too.

What bothers me most is that my package arrived in SA on Friday the 10th of March and it went to Customs. It is now the 18th and still in customs. I am starting to suspect that the package may have been stolen.

I cannot get any answers from Aramex as they do not reply to my emails and simply close all my requests within hours without answering them.

I phoned track and trace South Africa Friday for a parcel (not Aramex) that's been in South Africa as per usps since the 9th, I was told it was in transit and hasn't been captured here in SA yet because the jhb mail center has a back log.

packages dont go to customs, they sit in the couriers cage, its all electronic, maybe they stuffed up sending the docs or didn't scan your parcel, **** like that happens often with them, hence the delays. I doubt they have been stolen, with all Aremex's faults they never lost a parcel of mine.

What shipping company ships bluetooth speakers?

According to Aramex they cant ship a JBL speaker because of the lithium battery and magnet component in the speaker.

Funny though I did purchase another bluetooth device from Amazon that they shipped to me using Aramex.

And if read al the negative stuff about Aramex I think must rather opt for a different service.

Just registered but have not tried them yet.

Yip for some reason they refuse any and all battery products eventhough their website says they only have an issue with standalone batteries..

Four JBL Speakers ordered through eBay and delivered by Aramex so far...
Pic only shows two, but it is four - two black ones, a red one and a grey. That's Flip 3's. I also ordered two Flip 2's last year.
HOWEVER... I must stress that all the ones I have shipped have had bad charging ports and therefore the batteries were not charged up. Nevertheless, they were shipped and delivered through AGS.

Ah, good to know. Did mention to the guy who phoned recently- to ask why I haven't been using it since last year- that some have said that stand alone AND built in batteries are an issue. He confirmed they are so I just left it at that.

Well, the 20th now, my package still at customs. 16 days now and still waiting - 11 of those days in customs. No replies from Aramex via eMail and Facebook. They still keep closing support questions without answers, and telephonically they say they will come back but they never did in 16 days so far. Also, they have not yet replied to the Paypal disputes, so things are looking good that I will be getting a refund.
