Sheesh people. Does anyone read the FAQ at the top of the Aramex main page? Page 1, 4th item down.

SARS Customs in South Africa requires you to produce an Importers Code for customs clearance if you import goods into South Africa more than three (3) times in a single calendar year (either directly or through a clearing agent or courier company). The Importers Codes are issued by SARS.

Now, I happily import about 10 items a month for resale, keeping each one below R400 and out of customs, but as the penalty for not having an importers code is a R4 grand fine I finally decided to get an importers code.

It is a total, total bitch to get, but hopefully I should get my code in a couple of days.

Before you attempt to get your own importers code, read this:

I am having the worst experience with Aramex Global Shopper. My parcel from Amazon has been stuck at the US address for more than a week. I have sent messages via the website and I have phoned. I spoke to Vusi who promised me it would ship last night - guess what, it didn't! But now it was apparently allocated to a "bag". Today I had to phone three times, only to be put through to no one. Finally I reached Vusi again. I asked for Vusi's cellphone number and he told me it was cut off. So it seems Aramex isn't doing that well financially? Avoid avoid avoid!

Where did you get their financial information?

Well, since they had to cut off their cellphones and they don't have enough staff to field calls.

Three to be exact.

It might be his personal cellphone. I doubt the company would provide a business one and they are probably inundated with calls... I do agree though that they should get more people in, 3 doesnt cut it for this time of year

Nope. I was given the 0215268600 number where I could supposedly contact Mark Mahoney and there you have the option to be put through to cellphones. When you select the option it goes into a loop.

I am on the phone again with them and guess what - my parcel has still not left NY. Olivia put me through to Vusi (talk about passing the buck!), who didn't answer and then I just get put through to the wrong department and switchboard. They never phone me back. When I open a case online, it gets closed with no response.

Olivia gave me her supervisor details as I have a parcel stuck in customs since 3rd November:

Katleho.Motloung@aramex.com
Katleho Motloung
E-Commerce Team Leader
Aramex South Africa
Tel: +27 11 457 3000
Fax: +27 86 453 5595

I contacted her, and still have no results regarding my missing parcel...but hey, a new name and number for us to contact.

Regarding parcels stuck around the world - this is a 2nd tier service. Priority on airplanes is given to Aramex express parcels. If there is any space left, the AGS parcels get shipped. If no space, your parcel sits until there is space.
So, if you are in a rush between now and Christmas, use the Express part of Aramex. If not, take it as read that it will take about a week before you see movement.

What Customs Duties and VAT can I expect to pay for my shipment?
In terms of SARS Importing Act, Customs VAT and Duties may be levied on your shipment and charged to your account.
AGS will pay these Customs VAT and Duties on your behalf and upload the charges to your AGS checkout for convenient payment.

Wallet 30% 14%

What additional Fees can I expect to Pay for Clearance of my Shipment?
A Clearance fee of R50.00 per shipment will be charged for any shipment requiring Formal Customs Clearance.
A 2.7% Disbursement Fee will be charged when your shipment has incurred Customs Duties and/or Taxes equal to or greater than R500.00.

All this info is on page 2 of the FAQ on the webpage.

Is this per person or address?

If I use a different name but same address I hope that's no problem?

Can my family or friends use my Aramex Global Shopper account to receive mail and packages?
Unfortunately, that’s not possible. For legal, privacy and security reasons no one is allowed to use the account registered in your name. You are the only person allowed to use your account to receive packages.

Lol, I have been importing for years, and after a R2500 customs fine for an incorrectly declared parcel, I made sure I read the small print. :D

Ok so here is what I am looking to buy on black friday from Amazon, are my customs and duties charges looking correct?

Face Moisturiser - 19$ (let's say its for the wife) / 20% 14% - Around 6$
Magnetic phone car mount - 8$ - no idea under what this will fall
Dog nail grinder 10$ (can't find this anywere else in SA) - Same no idea
Headphones 50$ - Cables

Total: 87$

Now looking at the FAQ, not sure if it's actually worth it to buy with all the charges

Eish, is that kind of fine compulsory even if you decide not to take the parcel?

The parcel from China was $188. I submitted the invoice for $188. The Chinese seller declared the parcel at $30.
Customs fined me R2500. This amount could not be appealed.
This was DHL and not AGS, but the same thing could happen to anyone. Now I make a point of saying; "Please put invoice for the full amount in parcel." The Chinese usually reply in shock, asking if I'm sure. I'm definitely sure.

Most things on your list are 15% + Vat. The face cream is a luxury item, and a semi-liquid as well, so you might have problems there. I would leave well alone.

I have an item at customs and have called them twice to get the invoice to pay them for customs. Still have not received anything. Any other way to get this payment through to them?

No, you have to wait for customs to release the parcel. Only then you will see an amount to pay. I am also waiting for a parcel to be released. 3 weeks in customs now.
