About Archeage
Currently in the launching, Archeage is a new MMO from Korean developer XL Games, who are known as the former developers of Lineage. It is being published in the west by Rift and Defiance publisher, Trion Worlds.
Archeage brings a breath of fresh air to the MMO market with its strong sandbox and crafting features, such as highly customizable open world housing, a very intricate crafting and economy system and 120 different character classes. The game also has very strong nautical elements with player-craftable ships and ship-based combat and trading. End game content includes player crafted guild castles and siege combat with future updates promising player created factions with faction v faction combat.
What does Archeage cost?
Archeage uses a variation of freemium called the Patron system. Patron status will need to be bought monthly for real cash or from other players with game gold via the auction house. It is possible to play without Patron status, but this does limit you quite a lot. It would certainly be possible to create a free account and then grind for the gold to buy Patron, but this would be a significant challenge at launch. We recommend buying at least one month's worth of Patron and then using game gold thereafter.
When can I play?
The official launch date is Tuesday the 16th of September at 7pm our time. There is also a 4 day headstart for those that have bought Founders packs. Headstart start on Friday the 12th at 7pm and runs until launch. Founders packs are still on sale, and likely will be until launch itself.
What are the Founders packs?
There are 3 different Founders packs, each with different benefits. All however include access to all of the beta events with Patron status included for their duration, and a four day head start at launch. They include varying amounts of cash shop gems and Patron status, and a title each. The highest tier pack also includes access to the ongoing Alpha server, which will become the test server after launch.
Are the Founders packs worth it?
The Silver tier pack costs $50 and includes a month of Patron status and $20 worth of cash shop gems. The gems should be able to get you at least one more month of Patron, so in all for $50 you get two months worth of Patron, access to all betas (with Patron), and the four day head start. After the first two months prices should have stabilized and it should be easy to maintain your Patron status with game gold. So in all the game need never cost more than this $50. So, yes it's worth it.
Where can I get a Founders pack?
They can be bought directly from the game site at http://www.archeagegame.com/en/shop/. Protip: The game is much cheaper if you pay in dollars. If you see prices in Euros or Pounds, try and clear your cache and refresh.
Is Archeage pay to win?
Nothing we've seen or heard about the game up to this point suggests any aspects of pay to win. Archeage is freemium however, and therefore not a free game. Purchasing Patron status, whether with real money or game gold, is definitely recommended in order to experience the game in full. The game does have a cash shop, but features primarily cosmetic items. The few non-cosmetic items are not bound and can therefore be bought from other players via the auction house.
Will there be server wipes?
There was a server wipe at the end of the beta events and everybody is starting fresh at launch.
How grindy is the game?
Being Korean, Archeage is definitely not free of grind, but the due to the broad sandboxy gameplay, the pain of the grind is vastly reduced and there are hordes of things to do. Max level though can be gained in under a week. The real challenge is crafting the end game gear, housing, ships and the guild castles.
