Article: Gareth Cliff arrested for speeding

Naks said:
Considering what he's driving, a few seconds of inattention and he'd be doing that kind of speed without even feeling the difference..

It happens a lot with new fast cars, my dad actually got a reduction like that. He had only had the car for a few weeks and got caught doing 160 on a road trip.
Truth is that if you are not used to the car and its a fast car, the speed can jump very quickly

Like Rob Vember said this morning: If you are going 61 in a 60 zone you are a criminal. Its no different.

Actually, it is different and the law agrees, hence why you have more severe fines the further you transgress, up to the point where you are immediately arrested.

Meh, I don't really have any kind of problem with a modern car doing that kind of speeds on a highway at night.

The cars are built for it and the only thing really holding them back is traffic which is sparse at night.

In my opinion the speed laws should be updated.
Good idea bro. Lets increase the speed limit on top of the amount of drunk drivers on the road

haha wow! the Self-righteousness in this thread is a joke. 180 in a 120 zone is not the end of the world, people acting as though he deserves to rot in jail  if it were 180 in an 80 zone id agree, fine him and be done with it. Get so worked up over something so insignificant.

He definitely does not deserve special treatment though, same as every one else.

Na... the attacks on Gareth always seem to get personal.

Ja, I think that he has brought that on himself with his outspoken, controversial and "in your face" attitude on the radio.
He should not be at all surprised that a lot of people that he has previously antagonised are now taking the opportunity to have a dig at him.
It goes with the territory. If that is how he wants to live his life, then let him understand how the public will react to his various incidents.
It's no good complaining about their reaction, take it up with Gareth and his public personality.

Indeed! That's why when I took delivery of my Saab two weeks ago, the first thing I did before heading to CTN was to set a speed limit warning at 130kmh.

That is the same speed that a friend of mine got killed ...... 60 over the limit is criminal, nothing self righteous about it. Judging by your response, you indulge in those speeds too and I hope, if you do, that you will get yours one day and that no innocents will suffer from it, just you.

Really? Karma? Treating people badly, and his 'punishment' for that is getting arrested for speeding? LULZ

If you know GC, you know that let's assume YOU did this, and it made it onto the news, he would TEAR you apart on his radio station - I can almost imagine the chats on the radio.

As a matter of fact, that incident with the 2 mini's racing where the kids were killed, he discussed that - I wish I could play that 'discussion' for you - he had a field day with them.

However, it's now happened to him except he just hasn't killed anyone... YET! (if he has done this 180 story once, how many other times has he done it, except, now he was caught)

If you have nothing nice to say, rather just don't say anything.

This annoys the cr@p outta me, i have lost so many friends in the past yrs to road accidents. I am sick to death of GP road users, driving too fast, too reckless and too arrogant(Not to mention the rage). Just what makes people think their invincible just because they have a car surrounding them. And why do most people think its impossible for them to harm innocent people accidentally all while having this ****y road/driving etiquette. If you don't care about your own life at least be a decent human and have some regard for others out there, your not the only one on the road!
Who the hell is GC?!?! he must face the same punishment as every other citizen because that is all he really is...another citizen of this country and to whom the same laws apply.

I would like, if I may... To take just a little issue here with all the posters saying that a nice, new car might accelerate a little quicker than you realise. Speed is relative... Not to you in the car, but rather to you and other cars around you. There is NO mistaking a 60km/h speed differential between you and the cars around you... Ever.
I race cars and despite what you might think, racing isn't about 300km/h... It's about finding 5km/h more than the guy in front of you because you are both traveling at relatively the same speed. We all walk at about 5km/h and you have plenty of time to look around... Now, imagine "walking" through a shopping center at 60km/h... Blah, blah, blah to everyone defending 182 in a 120 zone... It's dangerous end of story. Full force of the law thank you very much!

I think there should be a law to allow for travelling at 140km/h, only in a specific lane on the freeway, and after having done an advanced driving course. The slightly faster speed should be sold as an added benefit for those who complete the course, to convince people to go for advanced training.

And lets face it, those people would drive fast whether this law was implemented or not.

That's going to be a very complicated mess.

i dont think in jhb anyone who drives in the fast lane drives below 120 when there is no traffic

i know many times driving in jhb at 160 and cars come flash you ....
