ASUS EEE PC - 7" Laptop

my (probably unpopular) view is that the 9" will be a bit of a flop. and i'll probably eat my words in a years time, but so what, it is fun to make predictions.

and why will it flop? price. by the time they have the price all worked out, "normal" laptops will have dropped further. it is nice to have an eee at all the popular price points, 299, 399, 499, 599, but only the lowest price point will attract those who are bargain hunting for a cool toy. proper laptops will compete with the 9" eee directly, but have more features, bigger screens etc. if you want a light small lappy for travelling you will probably pick the cheapest one, which will be the 7" and is probably why the 7" is selling so well now.

flame away..

I'd actually tend to agree with you. There is one ray of hope! The soon to be released Win XP version costs the same as the similarly spec'd Linux version. What this means is that there is some sort of saving on hardware somewhere if they can offer an XP license at the same price.

I really don't think it will cost $499, it's just no worth them even releasing the product. The whole point is that it's cheap and cheery.

I read somewhre te new 8.9/9" will have a GPS option and touch screen option... that'd be REALLY cool.

By the by, the 2G surf has already increased in price at IC from R2699 to R2999 since I got mine like 3 weeks ago...

Yeah, /me was sad when I saw that the other day...Still worth it though IMO

Ya, I think so too. Must not get any more expensive though.

The 2G does not have upgradeable RAM, has a smaller battery and only a 2GB HDD. Also no webcam or carry case...

Well, I went and got it today, R2699 at Hifi Corp :D

Its fantastic, only problem though, is that I cant get it to pick up my iPod...So I'll be installing XP on it tomorrow :)

Will be great for uni!

Yip. Xp all the way!

Make sure you have a SP2 boot CD else it won't work. Trust me...

Well, I dont have an external cd drive, so I'm having to go via the USB drive install....sheesh :O Its a PITA but it will be great if/when it works :D

Do you have an external USB hard drive enclosure?

Yeah, but its SATA so....That wont work will it? But I think I *may* have got it sorted. I kept getting a could not find Bootinfo.inf or something, turned out there was an error in the script :S

It would work if your DVD drive is also SATA...

You sure that that is a boot CD?

It was a boot CD :D Got all installed, just wondering, when you boot up, does it ask you what you want to boot in to? Mines gives the XP option, as well as an XP repair option...:S

Nope. Mine works just like a normal XP install. Boots straight into the desktop with no options...
