ASUS EEE PC - 7" Laptop

I finally have some cash and am interested in taking the plunge and buying a little 2G. Problem is, the price got pushed up to the 3k mark everywhere, it seems. Does anyone know of descent places that still sell them at the cheaper price?

That is why I grabbed mine when I could. I can't find anywhere now that has the 2G for less than 3k :( For that price it is still worth it IMO. More than that I would say no.
 
Well, at least I can get a 8gb SD card for R430 or a 4gb for R220, which isn't bad, I think. 6mb/s transfer speed. Would've liked something better, but then the price goes up as well. Will find out about that though.

Ya, that is a good price. I got a 2GB one the other day. You really cannot do much with the 2GB SSD it comes with except install XP on it.

Pity that the base model a) does not have the bigger battery and b) does not have expandable memory. Don't know why they did that really. But 512MB runs XP fine for the bulk of what you are going to use the EEE for anyway so it is not the end of the world.
 
Well, I'll probably install an nlite version of windows, which should clock in at around 200mb. Also want to install Visual studio which apparently works fine, as long as your projects don't get too complex, which they won't on this machine, as I'd mostly use it when the power's out and maybe when I want to be a bit more social while still being able to do some work, in the living room, so I'd only really type on this and execute and debug the code and stuff on my desktop.

Yip. VLite should work fine as well. I just didn't feel like fiddling around with it so I went with the fullsize XP install which came in at 900MB with SP2.
 
You can still buy the 2G for R2699 at Hifi-Corp. SOOOOO tempted, must resist!

You'd swear that the entire electronics industry in South Africa is incapable of providing me with a 12V > (9.5V / 10V / 10.5V) converter.

AAAAARG!

And there is not a single EEE Car Charger in this country for sale.

$499 - Thats about R3800 for a compact, 8GB SSD and 1GB RAM. Thats great!

Too bad we don't have the 8G's here :(
 
I have a great question for you HJ2K_X:

On the 2G model, could you add more ram to it even though there is no access bay door? Basically could you take the thing apart and there would be a spare ram slot even though the 512mb chip is soldered on??? That way I could get a maximum 1.5 Gb of ram which tied in with a 8 gig SD card isn't a bad little machine for office and email.
 
A friend of mine has increased his ram, though I suspect he has the 4g and that he replaced the chip it came with. (Also put a USB bluetooth adaptor where the webcam would normal connect to, and is booting off an 8 gig SD card...)
