ASUS EEE PC - 7" Laptop

I doubt it wouldn't have speakers. More likely moved somewhere else on the device.

If you hadn't guessed from the headline, and as rumored just an hour ago, there's 9-inches of LCD on this thing. Actually, 8.9, but who's counting? We found out that and a few other little tidbits about this Eee PC "New Generation" at the ASUS booth just now, but for the most part the 9-inch Eee PC is quite similar to its 7-inch forebearer. Anything past that ASUS is saving for tomorrow's press event when this laptop will become officially official, but whatever they end up calling it (Eee PC 900 is rumored), it's certainly for real. The battery impact of the new display is said to be "negligible," with 2.5 to 3 hours of battery quoted. ASUS wouldn't let us turn it on since it's all so very secret at the moment, but they did confirm some release details. The 9-inch Eee will hit in the "middle" of 2008, with that €399 pricetag for the 12GB version, but other capacities available (we saw an 8GB on display). No word yet on US pricing, but we're trying to pry it out of them

You'll probably end up paying closer to R6000 for that 9" model, which sort of defeats the point of the thing. Might as well save up another grand and buy a descent 15" laptop with 1gig ram, 80gb hdd, etc. You get a DVD-RW too!

I paid R5400 for my normal laptop and then R250 for a gig of Ram [laptop came with 512MB]. Mine has a 120Gb HDD, DVD-RW, bluetooth, wifi, fingerprint reader, sd card reader. So it definitely would not make sense to purchase the EEE's if the price was over the 4k mark.
 
It's unlikely that they would sell the 9 inch at a higher cost. More likely they will vastly lower the price of the 7 inch as an entry level model and make the 9 inch similar in price to the current 4G model. It's simple economies of scale.

well that would be nice but I tend to agree that the 9" will no doubt be more expensive and the 7" willstay the same - in SA at least...But time will tell.
 
I hope not but knowing South African suppliers it will be like that. Still, for R2700 you got the deal of the century in my opinion.
 
Anyone know where I can find an easy to install Linux version of Objectdock (like in windowblinds for XP) ??

vlc, and quite a few other apps, arent in the @standard@ list of repositories that asus supplies, so you gotta add a few more

here is specific instructions for vlc...(not sure if this repository is still active....see the link at the bottom fo this post for mroe repositories to try), herewith, the difficult way.....the easy way is right at the end of this post


Press Ctrl+Alt+t (This makes a terminal appear)
In the terminal type:
sudo kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list [ENTER]
(This makes a text editor appear with the file "sources.list" already open)
Type a new line into the sources.list file:
deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
Save sources.list (In kwrite this should be obvious)
Exit from the text editor (kwrite)
You should now be back in the terminal. If not, Press Ctrl+Alt+t again.
In the terminal type:
sudo apt-get update [ENTER]
sudo apt-get install vlc [ENTER]

If this has worked, you can test it by typing vlc in the terminal

Exit the terminal by typing exit [ENTER]

an easy way to add all the usual sources is to run these commands in a terminal, and then install vlc
wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/eeepcrepos/key.asc
sudo apt-key add key.asc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

Are you still using the "easy mode" that the EEE comes with or have you swapped to the more advanced version?
 
I was just reading about the new one... 9".... wonder when it'll be out. Starting at 399 pounds...
