I was your customer. I was a very good marketing tool that was available for free. I ensured that numerous friends and family moved over to your ISP when you took this market and decided enough was enough with costly Internet.

Deciding to offer a uncapped 4mb package was needed, then deciding to change the t's and c's to be one of the most restrictive uncapped packages i've seen, wasn't needed.

I am no longer your customer. I am no longer a very good marketing tool, in fact I am one of the worst ex-customers to have now as I have the power of the web, twitter, facebook etc to convince all that Afrihost is yet another SA company who just doesn't have a clue what customers want.

I'm sure I won't be the only one.....

I've recommended them in the past, too, before they went for the "uncapped" accounts. Even the company I work for is with Afrihost, fortunately not on an uncapped package. The deafening silence is nerve-racking. If they fold it's going to be a big headache. :(

I was thinking about this last night, and it is certainly an difficult position for afrihost to be in

The HAVE to respond to MWEB's offer otherwise they will lose a lot of business. However, the only way they can afford the upstream bandwidth is if they throttle everyone.

Damned if the do, damned if they dont

There is more though. Eventually everyone will move to an ISP who's t&c's make sense. Currently this seems to be MWEB. This means that the smaller isps are going to fold. Which means all the end users will be with mweb. which means mweb has all the power. which means that mweb can set pricing as they please.

I think it was just too much, too quickly. And unfortunately no one could have predicted what would happen when the ISP's open the floodgates with these uncapped accounts. In my opinion only Mweb had enough time to prepare themselves since they started all of this. So we as users just need to keep on moving till the market settles.

Thats a joke right?

the solution is pretty simple, packages aimed at those who are heavy users.

package 1: uncapped 4mb for the average user (happily won't get past 30gb in a calendar month)
package 2: uncapped 4mb for the intermediate user (happily won't get past 90gb in a calendar month)
package 3: uncapped 4mb for the power user (won't get past 200gb, and before all you fan boi's harp about the limit, 200gb is a big chunk and there is only so much pr0n/buffy reruns you can download)

each package has a price, if you are a buffy fan who really needs to download ta intaweb, then expect to pay around 1000 a month, the rest can be priced accordingly. The benefit of this scheme is that the power users can be put onto a different segment (costs required for this would be retrieved from the extra costs associated with the account) and those users wouldn't be messing up the service for other customers.

I think Vonnii is correct. I think even MWEB was caught unawares with the initial download frency. People are now downloading everything they can and not just what they really need. Hopefully it will last two months or so and then things should normalize.

Rubbish look at axxess and see the power users they do nearly 1TB a month

Yes, but the price they pay is significant enough to keep the numbers lowish and therefore affordable for the ISP. Now with cheap uncapped and everyone doing excessive amounts there is not enough average users to subsidize the powerusers and the BW becomes to expensive for the ISP.

It works pretty much the same as your medical aid. The healthy people that only needs care once every now and then subsidize your sick people and that is why you do not pay R10K a month on healthcare but rather R500 - R2000. At this moment everybody is sick and the medical aid do not have enough money to pay for everyone's care!!

The fact that they're offering NO damage control (one Q&A post on MyBB is not damage control) is probably going to sink them.

Dont blame him if responses are slow if you send emails to [email protected] since his internet is shaped/throttled like hell since he exceeded his 30GB usage already and being throttled to under 20Kb on his 4Mb line :) , rather try the other addresses you may get a quicker response :)

Now that was funny LOL

Hey... do you want cheese with that whine?

You obviously didn't read the T&C's properly - and tried to download a lot of stuff, and probably got throttled for that. Now you want to whine about that?

Get a life man.
