Can anyone recommend me a good (read free) AV for Windows 10?

I previously used Sophos, and didn't really take to it. Used AVG before too, which wasn't half bad. Anything else?

... also activate a dose of common sense about emails, attachments, downloads, and dodgey websites...

My "10" comes with Windows Defender Security Centre and works nicely - so nicely that I've removed NOD32 from my main PC.

Yeah, Defender is good enough for most cases. I'm using Bitdefender on one of my PCs at the moment as I hacked auto updates to just never happen (a particular update was causing something close to a meltdown - hardware issue there). With that said, Bitdefender is a decent choice, unless you need complex configuration, which it doesn't offer.

AVAST - seems to be good.
I also run a Malwarebytes scan every few weeks too
