For interests sake, what would "market related" salaries be for a person with the following experience in Jo'burg, Cape Town and Durban? Looking around some job sites I've seen these vary greatly based on location, even if job requirements are similar.

- 10 years working with websites - HTML, DHTML, Forms, Javascript, Photoshop, Apache, LAMP, WAMP, etc.
- 5+ years working with PHP, mySQL, JSON, XML, various web services & API's, etc.
- Understanding of SEO and Internet marketing.

Why are people so unhappy with what they earn? You'd think the interest rate going down would actually mean they have extra cash lying around to pay off debt...

Until the day that everything is free people will be unhappy with their cash :(

Hmmm.. i'd say very roughly 20-30k for Johannesburg, 15-25K for Cape Town and 10-20k in KZN... based on the numbers I saw on PNet.

Agree.

I'm a PHP developer (3 yrs now) and its a great language to get your feet wet but you need to move on. Will be moving onto erlang or python now.

Also the framework you use influences your salary - symfony developers earn way more than Zend guys. Reason, symfony is great for backend apps too while Zend is way too bloated and the market is flooded.

But one thing I hear from a lot of project managers is they cannot find experienced PHP developers. So recheck your skills and polish them up. Concentrate more on your SQL as that is one skill all developers need to master.
