Axxess & p2p..throttling?

WiseCrack - yes, that's actually totally normal.

The more "leechers" a torrent has and the more popular, the greater the upload speed. If there's more seeders, sometimes there's no uploading at all. If there's no seeders, the torrent is dead.
 
I just hit 14k per second on a torrent about as popular and then sank back down to 3k.
I'm 42% into a 280mb file after 5 hours.

Worst I've seen since getting ADSL six months ago.
 
What P2P you ppl using???
I use bearshare and no probs
 
torrent files.

I'm not keen on these "username and login" network sharing progs - I need to feel like I'm in control, even if it is just an illusion.

The idea of getting banned because I'm not playing according to some warez kiddies rules doesn't appeal to my inner penguin.
 
I'm using Azureus and getting 0000 - it gives me NAT error
 
I'm not with Axxess yet - still using TelkomInternet and lately my torrents have gone to hell. Used to get around 30kb/s now I'm lucky if I get 1kb/s. Strange that it is only affecting some people.
 
YIPPY!!!! as of this morning, it's back d/l @ 23kB/s
 
yeah - looks like everything is back to normal again today, but then again, it is Sunday ... hmm ... we'll have to see how things pan out tommorrow.

2 reasons. I'm waiting for 1st August to see if Telkom has any good/bad news concerning bandwidth usage. And I'm waiting for the price to come down on ADSL line rental before I pay more for my ISP costs - because I'm on a very tight budget.
 
A minor update:
I'm waiting on Axxess to come back to me within the next few hours, but it appears that Telkom may well have decided to throttle protocols (sent tons of data through, showing a throttle to around 12 - 16kb on p2p over the weekend, and currently at present sitting at a fairly visible throttle of around 6 - 12kb on p2p)
Spoke with Franco who's phoning and bouncing around from person to person at Telkom/Saix - to get an 'official' final word on what's going on, from them. Apparently this growing development isn't limited to Axxess' bandwidth.
We'll see if my thought voiced at Axxess on last thursday/friday already, about Telkom deciding to tear out the p2p market from any but its own 'unshaped' products, is actually occurring.

Ok, after a ton load of phone calls to various people at SAIX I have been given the following answers from various people:

Q) I am getting a lot of users contacting me regarding very poor P2P speeds on the SAIX network. Have you changed your shaping policies with regards to P2P/Torrents?
A) We re-look at the way we shape different protocols/ports from time to time and readjust our shaping policies to maximize our network efficiency. P2P is not given a high priority on the SAIX network and if a user would like an unshaped solution then they will have to purchase the unshaped package from Telkom.

Q) Does the shaping of P2P impact different resellers differently? Example ourselves and all the other companies that resell ADSL on the SAIX network.
A) These shaping policies are the same for all SAIX resellers.

Q) Why do some customers get affected more than others?
A) That depends on what programs they are running and on which ports they are using at that time.

Fair enough - there is an awful amount of uncertainty arising from possible changes next month. Still - if you're paying r249 for 3gb why not pay an extra r30 for 5gb? Esp if youre on a tight budget.

This SAIX over-shaping of p2p is insane - if I'm paying X amount for a specific amount of cap then I should be allowed to use it in whatever way I see fit.

Your shaping exercise is little more than censorship, because you've set a physical download limit on it. I'm paying for a line that can do 40kb/s - that should mean ANY data I wish to download through ANY protocol should be allowed.

So what now ?
Simple, screw SAIX and find a way around their limitations !

I'm so sick of telecomms in this backwards country.
 
Anyone with hassles, pm me and ill let you know how my torrents is configured as I am on saix and no hassles at all popping it full speed.

Reason for pm, just in case some clever telkom weasel reads the forum for help.

More to the point - you're paying for a specific cap level.
 
Exactly which P2P applications are you having "problems" with? Using my TelkomInternet 3Gb account and haven't noticed any differences lately. Surely it's the same as the Axxess accounts? i.e. SAIX bandwidth?
