I signed up for an axxess 1024 kbps uncapped account and downloaded over the weekend a total of 17GB. This morning my speed is like dailup and after a call to them they told me i am throttled because i download to much. Geez its only 17 GB. What if means to me is that the uncapped account will only do 60GB a month on full speed.

Not a very good start from my switch from iBurst to DSL.

Thats how most of the uncapped DSL services work. They implement a 'fair usage policy' .So after u exceed their fair usage policy they either shape your line or throttle you.
Shaping is where they slow down only downloads or p2p
Throttling is where they slow down your speed so it affects everything even browsing.
Most ISP's implement this system so you never get true uncapped internet

I hear of guys pulling down 200 - 300 gigs a month. I can barely hit 60 on MWeb.

Axxess will only throttle you during work hours if it's an uncapped express+ account, i,e you will have very slow speed weekdays 8:00 to 20:00 but the rest of the time it's full speed.

The cheap IS accounts are like that. You should use openweb GOLD.

i am on the same account my friend, it only slows you down during the day, just browse the internet and do your general stuff during the day. after midnight and during weekends they the remove the shaping so you can download at full speed. locally hosted files always give you full speed btw. in my opinion its the best account you can get right now.

I have the same account (R326/mth) which I only use at night mainly for torrents, so far this month I have done 55.5Gb and I would expect to do about 120Gb for the entire month.

If this is your only ISP account you'll have to start budgeting your usage to avoid the throttling.

Thanks for all the replies. Will try tonight again with a international newsserver, see if makes a difference.

Can u surf full speed during business hours atm?

Yes, just changed to uncapped and tested it for you :)

Surfing at normal speeds but skype, youtube etc are not really doable.

You might still have a problem because you overdid it over the weekend - the rolling 10 days story.

Did you do the 55Gb at full speed or throttled after about 20Gb?

From the graphs and usage figures attached you will see that I am not throttled only shaped as per IS rules.
This account actually works well for combined downloading / surfing / youtube /skype at night BUT the performance does vary .

A little background info:

1) This account is running on a 6Mb line which could explain the upload speeds.
2) I only use this account at night.
3) During the day I use capped accounts from Telkom / Axxess / Afrihost which run at full 6Mb speeds.
4) I am not interested in trying to download the internet and try to avoid being throttled, +/- 4Gb/day seems to work giving a price of +/- R3/Gb which is fine by me :)

My usage today:
Year-Month 2011-06
Total MB Used This Month 56573.03 MB
Average MB Used Per Day 2459.7 MB
Account Status Full Access

It works good after hours but during the day its sucks big time.

Oyea, had my dsl line working for 2 days @ home (axxess got it installed in 5 days which isn't bad) and today nothing. The router doesn't even pickup the dsl line LOL.

Naw, back to iBurst for me. I can get my 80-90GB /month and got 4 gig for just browsing and emailing ect for R400 bucks.

Yeah that is uncapped for ya!
You have unlimited downloads up to 60 gigs :D
